MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by four first-place finishes, the West Virginia University track & field team opened its 2014 season, today, with the annual Marty Pushkin Track Classic at the WVU Shell Building.
"The meet proved productive on some level for a number of women in the program," said coach Sean Cleary. "I was encouraged by the performances in the pole vault. Many of the ladies were jumping at heights that they left off last year during the outdoor season."
In total, the Mountaineers had participants in five events.
Katlyn Shelar and Tori Bertrand tied for first place in the pole vault with marks of 3.75 meters, respectively. Bertrand’s vault shattered her previous personal-best mark of 3.33 meters set last season.
"It was nice to see Katlyn back in the uniform. She looks to be right on pace to have the breakout senior season that she wants," Cleary said. "Tori was the highlight of the day. Jumping two bars that she has never cleared in competition should give her the faith that she can join Katlyn at the Big 12 meet and be very competitive."
In the 500-meter run, Christa D’Egidio took first place with a personal-best run of 1:21.09. The women’s one-mile run saw three Mountaineers finish in the top three with Shannen Daly placing first (5:30.06), Lydia Martinelli finishing second (5:31.56) and Allie Diehl taking third (5:34.49).
Meghan Jean-Baptiste made her West Virginia debut, finishing second in the long jump with a leap of 5.14 meters.
West Virginia will have five weeks off from competition before returning to action at the PSU Relays on Saturday, Jan. 10.
