MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore defender Kadeisha Buchanan of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team was named the Canadian U-20 Player of the Year today for the second straight season.
A Brampton, Ontario, native, Buchanan scored her second straight national honor following a brilliant year with the full Canadian National Team and the U-20 team at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada, where she played every minute at center back. She has made 26 appearances with the full national team.
“She’s meant just as much to the U-20 group as she’s meant to the senior team. She’s been wonderful at every level she’s played wearing a Canadian jersey,” U-20 coach Andrew Olivieri said in Canada Soccer’s official release. “Nobody’s more deserving of that award. She’s spent a whole two years with us. Since she came in, she fit in well and had the respect of all her teammates, so I don’t think there’s anyone that can question how much she deserves that award.”
The two-time reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Buchanan also is a two-time NSCAA All-American and picked up her first career first-team award this season. In recent weeks, she has been named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinal list and the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI First Team.
She helped the Mountaineers post 12 shutouts, two short of the program single-season record. WVU did not allow a goal on the road in Big 12 play. Buchanan posted a career-high eight points (3 G, 2 A) this season; her goals and assists totals also were career highs.
