MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Averee Fields of the women’s basketball team has been named the VSR Student-Athlete of the Week following her performance in two wins last week.
Fields averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and went a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe, as the Mountaineers picked up wins over Duquesne and IPFW.
Fields scored 20 points, reeled in five rebounds, dished out two assists, collected two steals and blocked a shot in the 79-60 win over the Dukes. The senior went 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
She followed up that performance against IPFW, netting a personal-best 11 made field goals and matched a career-high 23 points. Fields grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds, handed out four assists and snatched three steals in the win.
This season, Fields is averaging 17.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
This Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers are idle this week and will return to competition on January 10, at the PSU Relays.

Notes & Quotes: West Virginia opened its season with the annual Marty Pushkin Track Classic on Dec. 6, at the WVU Shell Building … WVU had four first-place finishes, led by Katlyn Shelar and Tori Bertrand who tied for first in the pole vault … Bertrand’s career-best vault of 3.75 meters shattered her previous personal-best mark of 3.33 meters set last season … in the 500-meter run, Christa D’Egidio took first place with a personal-best run of 1:21.09 … the women’s one-mile run saw three Mountaineers finish in the top three with Shannen Dalyplacing first (5:30.06), Lydia Martinelli finishing second (5:31.56) and Allie Diehl taking third (5:34.49).
This Week in Women’s Basketball: No. 23/20 West Virginia partakes in the annual Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic versus Marshall in Charleston on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 4 p.m. The Mountaineers then travel to Big Ten foe Ohio State on Monday, Dec. 22 in a 2 p.m. matchup, wrapping up play before the Holiday break.
Last Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU (8-1) extended its win streak to six games with victories over Duquesne (79-60) and IPFW (82-48). Bria Holmes scored a game-high 27 points in the win over the Dukes. Against IPFW, Averee Fields matched a career-high with 23 points. Linda Stepney inked her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 assists against the Mastodons.
Notes and Quotes: West Virginia has won 15 consecutive games in the WVU Coliseum, which is fifth longest in the NCAA. The Mountaineers are second nationally with 2.1 blocks per game. Lanay Montgomery leads WVU with 3.4 blocks shots per contest, ranking 12th nationally. Bria Holmes’ 23.7 points per game leads the Big 12 and is eighth in the NCAA. Linda Stepney is 11th in the country with 6.2 blocks per game.
Coach Mike Carey: “Our starters are going to play a lot of minutes. The way I look at it is we need to get them in shape now. We need to get them used to it now. When we get into league play, they’re going to have play a lot of minutes, so we need to just get them in shape now.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers are idle this week ... WVU begins its spring semester competition in Pittsburgh at the Pitt Hidden Duel from January 16-18 at 9 a.m.

Notes & Quotes: West Virginia competed at the 2014 AT&T U.S. Winter National Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina in its most recent competition on Dec. 4-6 … junior swimmer Andrew Marsh, the reigning Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Week, became the first Mountaineer to qualify for the A final at the Winter Nationals … Marsh placed fifth overall in the A final of the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best mark of 46.58 … Marsh also placed third in the B final and 11th overall in the men’s 100-yard butterfly, tying a season-best mark of 47.49 … on Thursday, the women’s 50-yard freestyle prelims featured two Mountaineer swimmers ... Jaimee Gillmore touched the wall in 23.33, placing 37th overall, and Courtney Parenti followed close behind in 38th overall with a mark of 23.34 … other notable WVU performances included a 48th place finish by Nate Carr in the men’s 200-yard individual medley, a 47th place finish by Jenelle Zee in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke and a 51st place result by Max Spencer in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke.
