MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball’s Jordan Anderson racked up a pair of accolades this week, earning a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team in addition to earning the league’s Offensive Player of the Week award as announced by the conference on Monday.
It marks the second consecutive week that Anderson has earned player of the week honors and is the third time this season. She becomes WVU’s first-ever player to earn All-Big 12 Volleyball First Team honors after being named to the Big 12 All-Freshmen and Big 12 Honorable Mention teams as a freshman in 2013.
“As Jordan has matured as a player, her numbers have reflected the effort she has made to make some significant changes in her game,” said Mountaineer coach Jill Kramer. “She continues to become more consistent in her play and in the way she approaches each match. Our skills as a team have also steadily improved, which makes it easier for all of our players to perform at a higher level. This honor is a testament to all the hard work that everyone has put in.”
Anderson finished the season leading the Big 12 in both kills and points, averaging 4.63 kills per set and 5.08 points. Her 495 kills this season rank first all-time in West Virginia history for single season kills by a sophomore and rank third overall as a single-season mark. Anderson was second on the team in digs with 245 for an average of 2.29 per set and finished fourth in blocks with a total of 59. She set a new career-best with 36 kills in a thrilling five-set win over TCU on October 11 and registered a team-best nine double-doubles on the season.
Most recently, the sophomore outside hitter led the Mountaineers to a 3-2 upset of Kansas State, who is ranked 18th in RPI. Anderson recorded a team-best 26 kills along with 10 digs for a double-double in the win. She also hit for a .240 clip with 10 kills, five digs and a pair of blocks against Kansas. Anderson finished the week with 36 kills, 15 digs and six blocks while hitting .202.
“It’s really nice to see Jordan’s effort recognized this week. We had a great team win over Kansas State on Saturday and she had some great numbers in that match.”
Haley Eckerman of Texas was named the Big 12 Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, while Caitlin Nolan of Iowa State was the Libero of the Year. Oklahoma’s Julia Doyle earned Setter of the Year accolades, while Kansas State’s Kylee Zumach was named the 2014 Freshman of the Year. Longhorn head coach Jerritt Elliott was named the 2014 Big 12 Coach of the Year.
