MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will look to snap a three-match skid on Saturday when they host Iowa State in Big 12 action at the WVU Coliseum. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
Saturday also marks Superhero Day for the Mountaineers. Fans are encouraged to wear their best super hero costume. Additionally, children who print off and complete the Musket color sheet will be granted free admission.
The Mountaineers (13-11, 3-7) return home following a two-game road swing through Texas and Oklahoma. WVU took a 3-1 loss at TCU on Wednesday before dropping a 3-0 contest to then-No. 25 Oklahoma.
Saturday marks the ninth all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Cyclones (12-9, 4-6). The two first met in 1994, with Iowa State earning the win, before the squads embarked on two more nonconference matches. WVU and ISU became league foes when West Virginia joined the Big 12 in 2012 and have played five contests since then. The Cyclones hold a 7-1 all-time series lead with the Mountaineers’ lone win coming by a score of 3-2 back in 1998.
The squads last met in Ames, Iowa, on October 4 when they Cyclones grabbed a 3-1 win at Hilton Coliseum. West Virginia rolled to a 25-21 win in the first set, but dropped the final three sets. Jordan Anderson had a team-best 15 kills, just missing a double-double with nine digs. Nikki Attea hit for a .414 clip with 13 kills and Lamprini Konstantinidou dished out 41 assists in the match.
Iowa State is coming off a 3-0 upset of No. 22 Kansas State on Wednesday. It was one of two upsets in league play this week, as TCU took a 3-2 win from No. 24 Oklahoma as well.
“We are looking forward to welcoming ISU to the coliseum this weekend and competing in front of a home crowd,” said Mountaineer coach Jill Kramer. “This week we've been able to rest, recover and put together a good game plan after spending a week on the road in Texas. Our spirit and work ethic in the gym has been great. I am looking forward to us bringing that to the competition arena on Saturday.”
Juniors Brittany Sample and Anna Panagiotakopoulos are among some of active leaders in assists and digs, respectively, in the Big 12. Sample, who has seen action at both setter and defensive specialist this season, boasts 2,304 career assists to rank third behind OU’s Julia Doyle (3,071) and Texas Tech’s Emily Ruetter (2,601). Likewise Panagiotakopoulos, who has played libero and defensive specialist this year, has 961 career digs and also sits third behind Texas Tech’s Rachel Brummitt (1,547) and Baylor’s Hope Ogden (972).
Her 961 career digs leaves Panagiotakopoulos just 39 shy of her 1,000th career dig. The Phoenix, Arizona, native is averaging 2.64 digs per set for a total of 195 digs on the year. She boasts a career average of 3.47 per set and a career-best of 28 set back in 2013 against Hampton.
Anderson recently capped a 26-match streak of double-digit kills when she posted a season-low of eight against Oklahoma. The sophomore outside hitter has recorded 10 or more kills in 46 of 57 opportunities. Prior to last week, the last time she had finished with less than 10 kills was November 21, 2013 against Texas.
