MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University novice rowing squad won all five pieces in a scrimmage against Duquesne on the Monongahela River earlier today.
The first three five minute pieces were rate restricted, with the novice eight of coxswain Courtney Caugh, Anna Cokeley, Lily Westerman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Nikki Jarrell, Sarah Mitchell, Abbigail Rees, Lindsay O’Donnell and bow Mollie Fisher defeated Duquesne.
The last two five minute pieces were open rate, as the novice eight of coxswain Courtney Caugh, Anna Cokeley, Lily Westerman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Nikki Jarrell, Jordan Devine, Lorena Rose, Krista Multanen and bow Mollie Fisher posting a pair of victories against the Dukes as well.
“I think it was a good race to top off the fall season with. I liked how the girls were able to pull hard and ahead at the lower rates in order to show off what they have been working on all year,” said assistant coach Amanda Merritt. “I want to commend the three girls who switched in for the last two pieces for continuing the success throughout the day, and completing the races ahead of Duquesne.”
The event marked the end of the season for the novice boats. The varsity squad resumes in March for the start of its spring season.
