Though she may have completed her eligibility with the West Virginia University volleyball team, former defensive specialist Liz Gulick continues to rack up the honors and was named Ms. Mountaineer on Saturday on the culmination of Mountaineer Week.
Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer recognizes students’ exemplary academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Candidates, who had to be eligible for graduation this May, also had to interview with the Mr. and Ms. Mountaineer committee. Gulick was one of five finalists for the honor.
“Winning Ms. Mountaineer is not only a huge honor, but also a great privilege. My time at West Virginia University has transformed who I am and I credit that to the people of this great state and the people that have been placed in my path whether for a fleeting moment or for my lifetime,” said Gulick. “I wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for them. Being allotted the opportunity to represent Mountaineer Nation in a role other than on the volleyball court is very exciting and humbling. I had never encountered people with such integrity, honor, and grit until I came to West Virginia and I could not be more honored to be chosen as a representative of these qualities as Ms. Mountaineer.”
A defensive specialist and libero, Gulick played for the Mountaineers from 2010-13. She earned a number of accolades throughout her career and was a nominee for the 2013-14 Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year. She was a two-time Capital One All-Academic District 2 honoree and received the big 12 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Award in 2013. Gulick was twice named to the Academic All-Big 12 team and also represented WVU at the 2013 Big 12 Leadership Summit. Amongst other accomplishments, she served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the 2014 WVU Presidential Search Committee, was vice-president of the WVU chapter of the council for exceptional children and participated in numerous community services projects, such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and Miracle League Baseball.
“We are very proud of Lizzy for being recognized as Miss Mountaineer. Lizzy has always been a high achiever, hard worker, and a giver. She truly embodies what West Virginia University is all about and it is nice to see a student-athlete be recognized for something more than what happens in the competition arena,” said WVU volleyball head coach Jill Kramer. “The fact that Lizzy continued to productively develop as not only an athlete, but as a student, classmate, and person, speaks volumes about how well our athletic department develops our student-athletes on every level and the type of people we can recruit to this great institution. We are developing strong, confident young adults, and giving them the tools necessary to go out and conquer the world, regardless of their pursuit of happiness.”
Gulick is currently pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in special education and mathematics for grade five through nine. She was sponsored for the award by the WVU Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which she has been an active member of during her time on campus.
