MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championships last Saturday, the West Virginia University cross country team moved up two spots to No. 7 in this week’s USTFCCCA National Poll.
The No. 7 ranking for the Mountaineers is their highest since the 2009 season and marks their 17th week in the top 10 since 2009.
"This team is running well right now. We feel as if we are very close to running a perfect race,” said coach Sean Cleary. “The Big 12 showed us that we have a very deep team. Our hope is to make another little improvement before looking to rest for the NCAA Regionals.”
Senior Kaitlyn Gillespie, sophomore Jillian Forsey and redshirt-freshman Maggie Drazba earned All-Big 12 Conference honors after finishing in the top 15, helping the Mountaineers to their second straight runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championship.
West Virginia also maintained its No. 2 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Region, announced yesterday by USTFCCA.
“I am pleased with the progress that we have shown over the last few weeks,” Cleary said. “At this point of the year, we want to remain healthy and confident. We will approach training with those variables in mind.
The Mountaineers return to action at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Meet in State College, Pennsylvania on Friday, Nov. 14.
