Tallahassee, Fla. - The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., the creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award, announces the three Finalists for the 2014 Biletnikoff Award, which is awarded to college football's outstanding receiver regardless of position based on performance for the current season. The electronic voting by the 265 distinguished members of the National Selection Committee and the Fan Vote tally were conducted from November 17th through November 23rd. Foundation trustees do not vote and have never voted.
“Kevin White emerged on the scene this year and showed what a talented performer he can be," WVU Head Coach Dana Holgorsen said. "His improvement from last year shows what a great competitor he is. I still believe his best football is ahead and congratulate him on his hard work toward being named a finalist for the Biletnikoff award.”
In applying the award's selection criteria at
http://biletnikoffaward.com/criteria, voters may consider the candidate's current season statistics, his team's strength of schedule, and other relevant factors consistent with the established criteria.
Based upon the vote by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, the three finalists for the 2014 Biletnikoff Award are: (listed in alphabetical order)
Amari Cooper, University of Alabama, Sr.
Rashard Higgins, Colorado State University, So.
Kevin White, West Virginia University, Sr.
“This is truly a dream come true for me,” White said. “Just being named a finalist for this award is an honor. I am very thankful for the opportunity that has been given to me this season. I would like to thank the coaching staff, and Clint Trickett, for giving me the opportunity and putting me in the position to have such a great season. I specifically want to thank Coach Holgorsen and Coach Galloway for making me work hard, their constant encouragement and for making me into the player that I’ve become this year.”
Foundation Chairman Charles Hopkins commented: "2014 marks another season of excellent play by receivers on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List. As the passing game continues its 25 year trend in revolutionizing college football, the ranks of talented receivers continue to grow in a geometric progression. We salute all of our watch list receivers, including the semifinalists and finalists, for their outstanding seasons."
Founding Trustee and National Selection Committee Co-Chairman Walter Manley II remarked: "Each year, due to the profound depth of exceptional college receivers, there are many more receivers who arguably deserve to be selected as one of only ten semifinalists or one of only three finalists, than there are semifinalist or finalist places available. Selecting those ten semifinalists and, subsequently, the three finalists is a very difficult task. We are fortunate that we have such knowledgeable, dedicated voters. We thank our 265 voters for their honorable commitment to the selection process."
Fans may now help determine which receiver will win the 2014 Biletnikoff Award by voting as often as once daily at the
Biletnikoff Award Fan Vote website. Fan voting will close on December 7th at midnight.
The top single aggregate fan vote for receiver will count as the equivalent of one national selection committee vote for winner.
The Biletnikoff Award winner will be announced live on ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 11, 2014. Former Heisman Trophy winner and college and NFL receiver Desmond Howard will introduce the 2014 Biletnikoff Award winner.
Also, the Biletnikoff Award has an online forum and discussion board on the Biletnikoff Award website. The forum consists of fan-created discussion topics that allow sports fans to voice their opinions.
The 2014 Biletnikoff Award winner will receive the Biletnikoff Award Trophy, the most beautiful in college sports, before 600 patrons at the annual black-tie Biletnikoff Award Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday, February 7, 2015. The banquet will be live streamed on ESPN3, as it was in 2013 and 2014.
The Biletnikoff Award banquet was hailed by 2013 keynote speaker Larry Csonka and 2014 keynoter Dick Vermeil as "the best banquet in college sports."
Former Notre Dame and Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann will deliver the 2015 banquet's keynote address (following a tradition of outstanding keynoters including Bart Starr, Larry Csonka, Steve Largent, Mike Ditka, Don Shula, Dick Vermeil, Dan Reeves, Archie Manning, Jerry Kramer, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Ron Jaworski, and Dan Fouts) and recognize the Foundation's 2015 scholarship recipients.
