MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - On the strength of last night’s 78-68 victory over Connecticut in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tipoff, West Virginia is back in the national rankings for the first time in three years.
Coach Bob Huggins’ Mountaineers are ranked No. 21 in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 and No. 24 in this week’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll, released earlier today.
This is West Virginia’s first appearance in college basketball’s top 25 since March 14, 2011 when the Mountaineers were ranked 22nd in the AP poll.
West Virginia is one of four Big 12 teams ranked in this week’s AP top 25 (No. 7 Texas, No. 11 Kansas and No. 13 Iowa State) and one of five in this week’s USA Today poll (No. 9 Texas, No. 12 Kansas, No. 13 Iowa State and No. 21 Oklahoma).
This is the first time the Mountaineers have been nationally ranked since they became members of the Big 12 in 2012.
West Virginia (5-0), which also shows early-season victories over Monmouth, Lafayette, George Mason and Boston College, will be back on the hardwood on Wednesday night against VMI at the Charleston Civic Center for a non-conference match up in the Capital City.
There are still plenty of good tickets remaining for the game and those can be purchased through the Charleston Civic Center Box Office by calling (304) 345-1500.
The game will tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
