Swimming Completes Mizzou Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams completed the final day of action of the Mizzou Invite at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Missouri, on Saturday night.
The men swam to a third-place finish, while the women finished sixth overall.
“We didn’t swim our best race plans this morning, but the teams made great adjustments tonight which resulted in some very fine swims,” said coach Vic Riggs.
In the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle, Emma Skelley raced to second place in 16:36.21. On the men’s side in the event, James Koval hit the pad in sixth place in 15:55.5
The women’s 200-yard back saw Taylor Gill place seventh overall in 2:01.82.Gill cut nearly six seconds off her season-best time entering the weekend. In the men’s 200 back, Jay Hickey placed eighth in 1:51.38.
“Overall, it was a pretty good meet,” Riggs said. “Chase (Williams), Jenelle (Zee), Max (Spencer) and (Nathan) Cobbe had really good nights.”
Jaimee Gillmore touched the wall in fifth overall in the women’s 100 free, finishing in 50.51. Her time was 1.86 seconds faster than her season-best mark. Andrew Marsh also recorded a top-10 finish on the men’s side, placing ninth in 44.42.
In the men’s platform diving finals, West Virginia placed two divers in the top four. Mike Proietto led the way, finishing third overall with a mark of 256.55. Alex Obendorf followed directly behind in fourth with a score of 254.10. Both divers improved significantly on their prelim marks.
Jenelle Zee placed ninth in the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:19.03, improving on her season-best time entering the weekend and her prelim time. In the men’s 100 breast, Max Spencer improved on his prelim time by nearly two seconds to place ninth overall in 2:01.53
Julie Ogden added to her impressive weekend by placing sixth in the women’s 200 butterfly in 2:02.23. Chase Williams took 10th place on the men’s side in the event, finishing in 1:48.75.
The Mountaineers will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the U.S. Winter Nationals from Dec. 4-6.
