MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomores Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence of the No. 7-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team have been called up by the Canadian Women’s National Team for a pair of matches against Sweden.
The squads will meet for closed-door matches on Monday, Nov. 24, and Wednesday, Nov. 26, in Los Angeles, California. The matches are part of Canada’s preparation for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada.
Buchanan, a defender, and Lawrence, a midfielder, also were called up for a pair of friendlies against Japan in October.
Additionally, Buchanan has been named one of 30 finalists for the 2014 Soccer News Net College Boot award, recognizing the women’s college player of the year. The editors of each of the sites in the Soccer News Net network nominated up to three local players for the award, and all are eligible for the regional player of the year award, too. Fans can vote for the winner HERE.
A Brampton, Ontario, native, Buchanan is the two-time reigning Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She and Lawrence, a Toronto, Ontario, native, were selected for the 2014 All-Big 12 First Team and were named the Big 12 Championship Defensive and Offensive MVP, respectively.
The duo helped the Mountaineers (16-2-4, 7-0-1) successfully defend their Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles in 2014. The squad was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Georgetown in the first round on Nov. 15. The teams played to a 0-0 draw before the Hoyas advanced thanks to a 4-3 edge in a penalty kick shootout.
