Luck Announces Spring Tennis Schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck announced today the schedule for the 2014-15 women’s tennis spring season.
“Our spring schedule allows coach Miha Lisac to continue his mission of building our women’s tennis program, while competing in one of the toughest conferences in the country,” Luck said. “We are pleased to host nine home matches, and we are excited to compete against four programs that have student-athletes ranked in the USTA/ITA Preseason Top 50.”
Texas, Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State have athletes that are ranked in the USTA/ITA Preseason Top 50. In his second season at the helm, coach Lisac and the Mountaineers are slated to compete against three of these top programs at home. All matches are held at Ridgeview Racquet Club until weather permits outdoor play.
“It is always exciting to challenge yourself against top-level competition, which the Big 12 Conference will always provide us,” Lisac said. “Right now, we are playing catch-up with those programs, but we are going to use those teams as a measuring stick in order to challenge ourselves more and to be able to compete with the highest level of competition.”
WVU opens its spring season with five matches on the road, starting with the Pitt Hidden Duel in Pittsburgh on Jan. 16-18. The Mountaineers then travel to Ohio State on Jan. 29, followed by a trip to Toledo, Ohio, to close out the month of January.
The Mountaineers return to Morgantown for the month of February and are scheduled to face Youngstown State and Towson on Feb. 13. On Feb. 15, WVU hosts California-Pennsylvania and Eastern Michigan. Non-conference play continues at home, when WVU takes on Cornell on March 7 and in-state foe Marshall on March 8.
Big 12 Conference play begins on the road against Iowa State on March 13, followed by a trip to Kansas State on March 20 and Kansas on March 22. WVU returns home to close out the month of March against USTA/ITA Preseason Top-50 ranked Baylor on March 27 and Texas on March 29.
The Mountaineers continue Big 12 play against Texas Tech on April 10, followed by a trip to Forth Worth for a match at TCU on April 12.
The Mountaineers wrap up regular-season play at home against Oklahoma on April 18, followed by Oklahoma State on April 19. The Big 12 Championship will be in Waco, Texas, from April 23-26.
WVU completed its fall schedule in the Martha Thorn Invite at Ridgeview Racquet Club on Nov. 1. The Mountaineers collected a combined overall record of 68-40 this fall, and freshman Carolina Lewis stood at a team-best with a record of 11-3 in singles play.
Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo had a combined record of 16-7 this fall, and senior Ikttesh Chahal and junior Hailey Barrett are undefeated in doubles play (4-0).
“I think we are definitely taking steps in the right direction. We have a good idea of where we are as a team and how to put us in a position to be successful throughout the spring semester,” Lisac said. “There are positive signs from the fall season, but we will never be satisfied. From a physical and mental standpoint, we are well prepared as a team and are definitely looking forward to progressing in the future.”
