Swimming Completes Day One at Mizzou Invite

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Andrew Marsh took home top honors in the 100-yard butterfly and a slew of Mountaineers set season-best times as the West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams completed day one of action at the Mizzou Invite in Columbia, Missouri, on Thursday.
Marsh became the first Mountaineer of the season to crack the 50 second mark in the 100 fly with a time of 47.49. Teammate Chase Williams touched in a time of 50.26 for 15th-place in the event.
“We had a very good day of racing,” said Mountaineer head coach Vig Riggs. “Overall, we had a strong day for all. Andrew had strong performances in his 100 fly and as the leadoff on the relay in the 100 back. The 100 fly marked his collegiate win at an invitational. Jaimee (Gillmore) had a lot of races and did very well. She was a key part of our relays.”
The women’s 200-yard medley relay started off the finals with a sixth-place finish. Courtney Parenti, Julie Ogden, Celia Martinez De La Torre and Jaimee Gillmore teamed for a time of 1:33.57. The men followed with a fifth-place finish as Tim Squires, Nate Carr, Christopher Brill and Andrew Marsh combined to swim a 1:21.78 in the event.
Emma Skelly touched fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time 4:52.14, dropping more than five seconds for a new season-best mark in the event. Kelsey Frantz clocked in at 4:56.45, shaving nearly nine seconds off her previous season-best and taking 11th place.
In the women’s 100 fly, Odgen led the Mountaineers with a fourth-place finish. She hit the pads in 54.11 to improve her best time of the season by nearly two seconds. Gillmore took 10th in the race in 55.34, while Martinez De La Torre was 16th in 56.87.
Nathan Cobbe hit the wall in 4:32.38 in the men’s 500-yard freestyle, finishing 10th in the event and dropping six seconds from his prelim showing for a season-best mark. James Koval and Pierce Bradshaw took 13th and 14th, respectively, with times of 4:35.67 and 4:36.14.
Taking sixth in the 200-yard individual medley was Carr, who clocked in at 1:48.78. Williams was ninth in 1:50.37 and Brill took 12th in 1:51.83. On the women’s side Taylor Gill finished in 2:06.63 for 15th place.
Parenti claimed a top-five finish in the 50-yard freestyle, hitting the pads in a season-best 23.23 for fifth place. Gillmore finished 10th in the event, also registering a season-best time in 23.15.
Squires grabbed an eighth-place finish in the men’s 50 free, sprinting to a time of 20.33 in his season debut in the event.
Mike Proietto and Alex Obendorf posted back-to-back finishes in the 1-meter diving event, taking fourth and fifth respectively. Proietto posted a score of 291.60, while Obendorf just missed a recording a season best with a score of 273.65. Markus Perry took seventh with 228.70 points.
In the women’s 3-meter diving, Haily Vande Poel claimed fourth with a score of 304.15. Lindsey Schmidt was seventh, recording 254.65 points.
The women’s 400-yard medley relay wrapped things up with a sixth-place showing. Courtney Miller, Jenelle Zee, Ogden and Gillmore teamed for a time of 3:43.88. Marsh, Williams Squires and Max Spencer matched their feat on the men’s side, combining for a time of 3:18.37.
The Mountaineers return to competition for day two of the Mizzou Invite tomorrow with preliminary heats starting at 11 a.m., ET. Finals will resume at 7 p.m. ET.
