MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team will look to end a five-match losing streak when it the Mountaineers host Texas Tech for a Big 12 tilt at the WVU Coliseum on Saturday. First serve will take place at 3:30 p.m.
The match will celebrate both active and retired military members as WVU’s Military Appreciation Day. Fans are eligible for free admission with a valid military ID.
“We are looking forward to hosting Texas Tech this Saturday,” said Mountaineer coach Jill Kramer. “I like how we are playing heading into this match. Everyone is contributing, everyone is bringing it and staying focused on the basics - communicating well, giving great effort on defense and making smart plays offensively.”
The Mountaineers (13-13, 3-9) will square off with the Red Raiders (15-9, 3-9) will square off for the eighth time in program history, with TTU bringing a 4-3 advantage to Saturday’s matchup. However, it’s West Virginia that has won the past three meetings, including a contest earlier this season. The two first met in 1985, with Tech taking a 3-0 win, and faced off again as nonconference opponents in 1995. West Virginia owns a 3-2 lead in Big 12 play since 2012.
West Virginia earned a 3-1 victory over Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas, on September 27. Jordan Anderson tied her then-career best with 24 kills, adding 12 digs for a double-double. Nikki Attea also double-doubled with 10 kills and 16 digs, while Evyn McCoy posted seven blocks as WVU held TTU to a season-low 13 kills in set two.
Being in the Big 12, the Mountaineers see plenty of action against teams from the Lone Star state. West Virginia is 3-3 this season against teams from Texas, claiming wins over Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor, and are 2-2 when playing in the Lone Star state. After going 0-8 in their first season in the Big 12, the Mountaineers have gone 7-7 against Teams from Texas since then. In addition to hosting the Red Raiders on Saturday, West Virginia will face Baylor once more before the end of the regular season.
Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s contest, one team will find its losing streak ended. The Mountaineers are in the midst of a five-match skid, with their last win coming October 22 when they took down Baylor, 3-1, in Waco, Texas. Meanwhile, the Red Raiders have lost six straight, going without a victory since a 3-2 win against Iowa State on October 18.
After a bye on Wednesday, the Mountaineers will wrap up their home slate on Saturday, November 22, when they host Baylor on Senior Day at the WVU Coliseum.
