Schwindel Named Athlete of the Week

A Livingston, New Jersey, native, Schwindel scored her goal in the 13th minute, her first score at a Big 12 Championship and her seventh goal of the season. She finished with a game-high three shots on-frame.
Schwindel now shows 33 career goals and is tied with Blake Miller (2008-11) for No. 6 on the Mountaineers’ all-time list.
WVU won its second straight Big 12 Soccer Championship title on Sunday, giving the Mountaineers five Big 12 titles in three seasons. The squad earned the conference’s automatic bid for the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The full bracket will be released today at 4:30 p.m.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: The Mountaineers (16-2-3) won their second straight Big 12 Soccer Championship title with a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Oklahoma on Nov. 9, at Swope Soccer Village, in Kansas City, Missouri … senior forward Kate Schwindel scored in the 13th minute, and junior midfielder Amanda Hill had the assist … junior Hannah Steadman matched her career high with six saves for her 10th shutout of the season, the team’s 11th … the Mountaineers advanced to the championship via a 2-1 win over eighth-seeded TCU on Nov. 5 and a 0-0 draw against fifth-seeded Texas on Nov. 7 … the Mountaineers edged the Longhorns 6-5 in a penalty kick shootout … junior midfielder Leah Emaus and freshman forward Michaela Abam had the scores against the Horned Frogs … Steadman made a combined five saves against TCU and UT … redshirt-freshman Michelle Newhouse came off the bench and stopped the Longhorns’ fourth and seventh PKs, helping advance the Mountaineers.

This Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU will play Bowling Green in the MAC Championship Semifinal at Akron, Ohio, on Friday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. … with a win, WVU will advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Akron/Western Michigan.
Last Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU extended its win streak to five games with a 2-1 victory at Western Michigan on Saturday, clinching the No. 2 seed in the MAC Championship.
Notes and Quotes: West Virginia completed the regular season with an 11-6-1 record (3-1-1 MAC) … junior Jamie Merriam gave WVU a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute with his eighth goal of the season … after Western Michigan tied the game at 1-1, freshman Jad Arslan notched his fifth goal of the season in the 86th minute to give the Mountaineers the victory … despite being held off the scoresheet on Saturday, senior Andy Bevin continues to lead the team with 12 goals, eight assists and 32 points.
Coach Marlon LeBlanc: “It’s a resilient squad. A lot has to do with our leadership. We have a great locker room and great kids. This team is battle-tested and they have played a daunting schedule all season. To go on the road and battle the elements is a testament to their character.”
This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia travels to Austin, Texas, on Wednesday to face the No. 5 Texas Longhorns in an 8 p.m. (ET) match up ... the Mountaineers previously faced the Longhorns at the WVU Coliseum back in late September, taking the first two sets before dropping the final three for the 3-2 loss ... on Saturday the Mountaineers return home to host Texas Tech in a 3:30 p.m. tilt ... the Mountaineers took a 3-1 victory from the Red Raiders earlier this season.
Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers suffered a 3-0 setback against Iowa State in Big 12 action ... Nikki Attea and Jordan Anderson led the Mountaineers with nine kills apiece as Attea hit for a team-best .333 clip ... Hannah Shreve helped WVU post 9.0 team blocks with her seven block assists, falling just shy of her career-best of eight total blocks ... Brittany Sample and Lamprini Konstantinidou split time at setter with 16 and 15 kills, respectively, while Konstantinidou led the Big 12 with a pair of service aces.
Coach Jill Kramer: “We were working on a 6-2 today, trying to take the strengths of all of our players and make some things happen offensively. I think that there were times when we were very, very good at that. It just wasn’t consistent enough yet. With time, it will get a lot better. We had some great performances out of some people – it didn’t matter where we’ve put Nikki (Attea), she’s done a great job for us. We’ve just got to get everybody else in that same place.”

Notes & Quotes: The men’s squad sits at 1-1 to start the 2014-15 campaign, while the women are still searching for their first dual-meet win of the season … the men earned a 174-85 win over Villanova in their most-recent outing, led by a sweep in the 500 free and 1,000 free by freshman Pierce Bradshaw … the women fell just short against the Wildcats, however, senior Julie Ogden earned a sweep in the 100 and 200 fly events … WVU will enjoy a three-week break from action before returning to competition at the Mizzou Invite on Nov. 20-22.

Last Week in Rowing: WVU novice rowing squad hosted Duquesne in a scrimmage on Friday, Nov.7, and claimed all five pieces ... the first three five minute pieces were rate restricted, and raced by coswain Courtney Caugh, Anna Anna Cokeley, Lily Westerman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Nikki Jarrell, Sarah Mitchell, Abbigail Rees, Lindsay O’Donnell and bow Mollie Fisher defeated Duquesne ... the last two five minute pieces were open rate and consisted of coxswain Courtney Caugh, Anna Cokeley, Lily Westerman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Nikki Jarrell, Jordan Devine, Lorena Rose, Krista Multanen and bow Mollie Fisher posted two more victories against the Dukes as well.
Assistant Coach Amanda Merritt: “I think it was a good race to top off the fall season with. I liked how the girls were able to pull hard and ahead at the lower rates in order to show off what they have been working on all year,” said assistant coach Amanda Merritt following the Duquesne scrimmage. “I want to commend the three girls who switched in for the last two pieces for continuing the success throughout the day, and completing the races ahead of Duquesne.”
This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team (4-0, 2-0 GARC) competes in two Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) matches on the road this weekend. The Mountaineers travel to West Point, New York, to compete against No. 16 Ole Miss on Saturday, Nov. 15 ... followed by a match against No. 15 Army on Sunday, Nov. 16.
Last Week in Rifle: WVU competed against GARC foe No. 9 Memphis last week. The Mountaineers defeated the Tigers, 4718-4637.
Notes & Quotes: The Mountaineers’ aggregate score was a season high, and just two short of the school and NCAA aggregate score record… WVU won both disciplines against the Tigers, 2339-2300 in smallbore and 2379-2337 in air rifle… senior Thomas Kyanko placed first in smallbore with a season-high 589 score … junior Michael Bamsey followed in second with a career-high 585 shot… senior Ziva Dvorsak matched her season high, shooting 583 for third place… senior Maren Prediger placed fifth in smallbore with a career-high 581 score… her 1174 aggregate also set a career best score for the two-time All-American… sophomore Jean-Pierre Lucas (579) shot 200 prone, a school record, last shot by Kyanko against NC State on Jan. 19… Dvorsak scored 597 (100-99-99-99-100-100) in air rifle placing first, one shy of her career-high… Gratz followed in second, matching her career-high 595 score… Kyanko shot 594 for third place, one short of his career high, and pushed his aggregate score to 1183, a career high.
Coach Jon Hammond: “The team’s progressing,” said Hammond. “We’re shooting better than we were just two weeks ago. We’re going in the right direction. It’s a result of the hard work we’re putting in every week and the fact that we have a couple matches under our belt. They’re doing the right things.”
This Week in Wrestling: The Mountaineers open up their home slate on Thursday when they host Arizona State in the first of four home duals ... the Mountaineers and the Sun Devils will square off at 8 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum ... the match up marks the home debut of WVU head coach Sammie Henson as well as the coaching debut of former WVU assistant coach and new Arizona State head coach Zeke Jones.

This Week in Women’s Basketball: The No. 17-ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team opens the 2014-15 season this Saturday, November 15 against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in the first round of the Preseason WNIT ... the contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip ... the winner of Saturday’s contest will play on Monday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Rider/Seton Hall game ... WVU, the defending Big 12 Conference regular season co-champions, returns five starters from last year’s squad that completed a program-best 30-5 record ... the Mountaineers have five newcomers that will don the Old Gold and Blue for the first time.

Notes & Quotes: “We need energy off the bench. [Crystal Leary] gives us instant energy off the bench. She’s a person that can play the four or five and is a person that gives us energy and will play hard.
