MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team travels to Atlanta to compete at the Georgia State Invitational at Piedmont Park, Oct. 10-12. The Mountaineers will face players from Georgia State and UNC Greensboro.
Action will get underway on Friday at 10 a.m., and will conclude Sunday afternoon. The tournament includes two full flights and one round-robin flight for singles action. It also features one full flight and a round-robin flight for doubles.
“We have seen some good things from the team, but there is a lot of work to be done, and this weekend is another opportunity for the team to get better,” coach Miha Lisac said. “This weekend is a good challenge for the team.”
Freshman Habiba Shaker, a native of Cario, Egypt, makes her debut for the Mountaineers this weekend. Shaker earned a first-place finish in singles and doubles play at the 2014 ITF tournament, and had a career-best junior ranking of No. 373 in the world in January 2014.
A former GSU student-athlete, Lisac is excited to show the Mountaineers around his alma mater. During his six-year stint as the women’s tennis coach, Lisac led the program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship finals and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals.
“I am excited to go back to see the team, the people and the community at Georgia State this weekend. I spent a lot of time in Atlanta and in the tennis community,” Lisac said. “I still know some of the players on the team, and I am definitely excited to catch up with them and see how they are doing. I am also excited to show the Mountaineers the place where I spent 13 years of my life.”
Last weekend, the Mountaineers traveled to Akron, Ohio, for three days of competition against Michigan State, Cornell and Akron. The Mountaineers have a combined overall record of 30-17 this fall, and freshman Lyn Yuen Choo carries a team-high singles record of 5-1.
