MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior Jamie Merriam was named the Athlete of the Week for his performance last week.
Merriam helped WVU to a 1-1 record last week, including a 3-0 victory over Duquesne on Sunday evening. Merriam scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season and added an assist for a three-point evening.
Merriam scored the second goal of the match in the 70th minute on a header to the far post. He then assisted on Jad Arslan’s goal in the 86th minute.
This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 14-ranked Mountaineers (8-2-2, 1-0-1 Big 12) open their home Big 12 Conference season against No. 10 Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. … the match is a “Dollar Night,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for $1 each … additionally, the first 100 fans will receive a WVU women’s soccer scarf … the first 100 Mountaineer Maniacs will receive a Maniac scarf … the match will be broadcast on NSCAATV.com.

Notes and Quotes: West Virginia currently has a 6-5 record … junior Jamie Merriam holds the team lead in goals (7) and points (16), while adding two assists … senior Andy Bevin leads the team in assists (6), and has four goals and 14 points … junior Ryan Cain has four goals and two assists for 10 points … Cain scored against New Mexico in a match that saw WVU play a man down for 89 minutes of the match following a red card to junior Francio Henry … WVU rebounded with the Duquesne win, outshooting the Dukes 24-10, including 17 shots on goal … it was the most shots on goal since WVU took 15 against Richmond on Sept. 16, 2011 … Bevin, Merriam and freshman Jad Arslan all scored against Duquesne.

This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers wrapped up their non0conference slate last week when they dropped a 3-0 match at in-state foe Marshall ... the squad went 10-4 outside of league action, with three of those losses coming at the hands of teams that were either ranked (No. 9 BYU, No. 13 UNC) or receiving votes (Duke) in the AVCA Poll at that time ... Nikki Attea led the squad with 12 kills, hitting .429 in the match with an ace ... WVU resumed conference play on Saturday when it fell 4-1 to Iowa State at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa ... Jordan Anderson had a team-best 15 kills, marking the 20th consecutive match she has recorded 10 or more kills.
Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia hosts its annual Dig Pink match on Wednesday when the Mountaineers welcome Oklahoma State to the WVU Coliseum for a 6:30 p.m. tilt ... the squad will don pink jerseys in honor of breast cancer awareness and Stephanie Henson, who is currently battling the disease and is the wife of wrestling coach Sammie Henson, will serve as an honorary coach ... on Saturday, WVU hosts TCU in a match that has been moved to 4 p.m.
Coach Jill Kramer: “I was really happy with the way our team came out in set one. We had great energy, despite being down early, and fought back to take it. As the match progressed, our serving and passing digressed and allowed Iowa State to stay in the system too often. We’ll get back in the gym on Monday to work out some kinks there.”
This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers are idle this week and return to action at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 17, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Last Week in Cross Country: No.23 West Virginia placed second at the 2014 Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 4 … sophomore Jillian Forsey led the way in her season debut, finishing fifth overall with a 5k time of 16:58.69 … senior Kaitlyn Gillespie competed for the first time since 2012, while recording a 10th place finish in 17:17.46 … No. 16 Wisconsin won the meet with a team score of 37, while the Mountaineers placed second with a team score of 64.
Notes & Quotes: WVU has recorded three top-five finishes to begin a season for the first time since … freshmen Maggie Drazba and Millie Paladino both made their collegiate and West Virginia debuts at the Louisville Classic … Drazba placed 15th overall (17:20.56), and Paladino finished in 21st (17:34.54) … in total, three WVU underclassmen finished in the top 21 in the meet which featured three nationally ranked teams.
Coach Sean Cleary: “For many of those racing today (Saturday), this was the first race of the year. I feel confident that we will continue working hard and see big improvements over the next month.”
This Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers travel to Atlanta this week for three days of competition, from Oct.10-12, at the Georgia State Invitational.
Last Week in Tennis: WVU competed at the Akron Invite against host Akron, Cornell and Michigan State ... freshman Lyn Yuen Choo went three-for-three on the weekend for a team-best five wins this season.
Notes & Quotes: The Mountaineers have a combined overall record of 30-17 this fall.
Coach Miha Lisac: “We had a good showing at No. 1 doubles, and battled hard in singles today. The credit goes to the players for pulling out tough matches today,” coach Miha Lisac said. “We have to get better at execution and closing out opportunities when they present themselves.”
This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers will officially kickoff their 2014-15 campaign at the West Virginia State Games in Huntington, West Virginia … the two-day event begins on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m., and concludes Saturday.
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia hosted its annual Gold-Blue Intrasquad Meet at the WVU Natatorium … senior Tim Squires set a new pool record in the 100 free, helping the Gold Team to a 288-277 victory over the Blue Team … Squires’ split of 44.92 in the first leg of the 300 free relay broke the pool’s previous 100 free record of 45.12 held by Jake Lucas of Pitt.
Notes & Quotes: Some of the meet’s highlights included the men’s 1,000 free when freshman Pierce Bradshaw made his Mountaineer debut while taking first place in 9:48 … senior Haily VandePoel swept the women’s 1-meter and 3-meter diving events … sophomore Jaimee Gillmore swept the women’s 50 and 100 free events.
Coach Vic Riggs: “We had some really good highlights today. Obviously, Tim breaking the pool record is a great way for us to start our season … I enjoyed watching the kids compete this afternoon. It looks like they had a lot of fun.”

Last Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers posted three Top-10 finishes in the Women’s Open 8+ event, earning a silver medal at the Head of Ohio in Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 4 ... WVU’s firt boat, crewed by Elizabeth Duarte, Louisa Morgan, Lisa Deklau, Sadie Kalathunkal, Elizabeth Kantak, Emma Preston, Kelly Kramer, Emily Stasi and coxswain Brittany James earned a second-place finish out of 17 teams (15:28.68) ... the Mountaineers second boat of Megan Brophy, Madison James, Susannah Hartlove, Rebecca Gehring, Colleen Giesbrecht, Audrey Geise, Melinda Sharon, Bethany Sapen and coxswain Megan Haefele crossed the line in fourth place (15:52.83) ... Addie Dulaney, Aria Asselta, Alison Coates, Kimberlie May, Alisha Brownfield, Whitney Chrisman, Jacqueline Spiropoulos, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Abigail Harris finished in ninth with a time of 16:57.21 ... the Mountaineers had four entries in the Women’s Open 4+ event, but the regatta was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Coach Jimmy King: “We were pleased to see an improvement from our ‘C’ crew compared to last year. In addition to finishing higher in the standings this year, the margin between our ‘C’ crew and our ‘A’ crew was significantly reduced,” King said.
This Week in Rifle: The No. 1 WVU rifle team looks to defend their back-to-back, nation-best 16th NCAA Championship this Sunday ... the Mountaineers will begin fall semester competition on Oct. 12 in a match against No. 5 TCU at the WVU Rifle Range.

Notes & Quotes: Senior Ziva Dvorsak leads the team in air rifle, averaging 595 … Dvorsak and junior Garrett Spurgeon lead in smallbore with 584 averages … six shooters with NCAA Championship experience return this season: seniors Taylor Ciotola, Dvorsak, Meelis Kiisk, Thomas Kyanko and Maren Prediger and Spurgeon … collectively, the group has earned 20 All-America honors ... also returning for the Mountaineers are junior Patrick Sunderman and sophomore Jean-Pierre Lucas … Sunderman earned All-America Second Team in smallbore and Honorable Mention in air rifle last season … the Mountaineers finished the 2013-14 season with a back-to-back and nation-best 16th national title and a 10-0, 7-0 Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) record … the team also won the GARC regular season title and its fifth-straight GARC Championship last season.
Coach Jon Hammond: “We are coming off a National Championship and are returning the full counting team from last year. This is one of the strongest teams we have fielded. I don’t think the ranking fuels that nor takes it away regardless of where we are ranked. We are focused on ourselves, and we are looking to improve throughout the year and want to shoot the best matches we can on a consistent basis.”
