Tennis Scores Three Wins in Singles at Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team closed out the Akron Invite with three wins in singles play over the host Akron Zips in Ohio on Sunday.
Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo went three-for-three on the weekend, earning her third singles victory of the tournament over the Zips Martina Zerbola (4-6, 6-2, 10-6). Choo carries a team-high singles record of 5-6 this fall.
Senior Ikttesh Chahal and freshman Carolina Lewis earned their first singles victory of the tournament. Chahal defeated Akron’s Ariadna Blinova (6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-7), and Lewis beat out Akron’s Shannon Newnes in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-8).
The Mountaineers captured one doubles win on the day against the Big Ten’s Michigan State. Sophomore Kaja Mrgole and Chahal defeated the Spartans’ Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot in a tie break with a score of 8-7 (3). The freshmen tandem Lewis and Choo fell to MSU’s Emily Meyers and Alexa Baylis, 8-3.
“We had a good showing at No. 1 doubles, and battled hard in singles today. The credit goes to the players for pulling out tough matches today,” coach Miha Lisac said. “We have to get better at execution and closing out opportunities when they present themselves.”
The Mountaineers continue fall action next weekend, Oct. 10-12, at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta.
