Tennis Completes Day One of Competition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team completed the first day of the Martha Thorn Invitational at Ridgeview Racquet Club with two doubles wins and five singles victories.
The Mountaineers went two-for-two in doubles action, as duo Hailey Barrett and Ikttesh Chahal defeated Liberty’s Brittany Yang and Nicole Wellman with a score of 8-7 (4). In the afternoon session, sophomore Kaja Mrgole and Barrett bested Akron’s Shannon Newnes and Maria Bessmertnaya (8-3).
The freshmen class controlled the court in the afternoon session as WVU went four-for-four against Akron in singles play. Freshman Lyn Yuen Choo defeated Akron’s Ariadna Blinova with a score of 1-6, 6-0, 10-8, and picked up her 10th win of the season.
Freshman Carolina Lewis bested Akron’s Shannon Newnes in two straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Habiba Shaker defeated Akron’s Maria Bessmertnaya in two straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Yvon Martinez overcame Akron’s Kati Mdzinarishvili in three sets to capture her first win on the weekend with a score of (3-6, 6-3, 10-6).
“We had some good matches today and got better as the day went on. We are looking to take the positive play into tomorrow and continue to progress,” said coach Miha Lisac.
The WVU Martha Thorn Invite resumes tomorrow with matches starting at 8 a.m.
