MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team travels to Fairfax Station, Virginia, following a month off from competition, to hit the water at the Head of the Occoquan. Both the varsity and novice squad are set to compete at Sandy Run Regional Park on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Mountaineers begin action at 11:40 a.m., with two of 35 entries in the Championship Women’s 8+ event, and four of 39 entries in the Championship Women’s 4+ event at 2:30 p.m.
“Given that we were on the water for only two weeks prior to the Head of the Ohio, we’re certainly expecting better execution by our crews at this weekend’s Head of the Occoquan,” said coach Jimmy King. “I’m excited as always to see the novices compete in their first regatta. I expect them to represent WVU very well in how they race and how they carry themselves throughout the day.”
The novice squad is set to race at 11:50 a.m. with two of 14 entries in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event, and one of 24 entries in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8+ event at 2 p.m.
“Being that this is the first regatta ever for many of these girls, we are just looking for them to be able to put a good race together. Some of them will be racing twice, in the 8+ and the 4+, so we are also going to be able to evaluate their fitness and see how far they have come since September,” said assistant coach Amanda Merritt.
WVU has been idle since the Head of the Ohio on Oct. 4, where the Mountaineers posted three top-10 finishes in the Women’s Open 8+ event.
“While we have clearly been progressing in our rowing and training over the past month, the results of this weekend’s racing should provide valuable information regarding the extent of that progress,” King said.
Last season, the Mountaineers earned two medals in the Women’s Novice 4+ race at the Head of the Occoquan.
