MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior forward Kailey Utley and sophomore defender Carly Black of the No. 8-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team were named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 2 Women’s Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honorees will advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballots, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in the coming weeks.
Today’s honors are the first career awards for Utley and Black. WVU also had two student-athletes earn all-district honors in 2013. Two Mountaineers have placed on an all-district team eight times since 2001.
“This a huge honor for Kailey and Carly and a big reflection of what these two young women do on the playing field and in the classroom,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “As a staff, we value academic success, and it is great two see two deserving student-athletes recognized.”
Utley, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, is a biology major and shows a 3.77 grade point average (GPA). She was a member of the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Soccer First Team and the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. She also has landed on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, as well as the Dean’s List and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
A first-year starter, she leads the team with 15 points (5 G, 5 A) and ranks No. 6 in the Big 12 Conference. She played a key role in helping the Mountaineers clinch their third straight Big 12 Conference regular-season title last weekend, as she tallied three goals, including both scores in the squad’s 2-1 double-overtime win over Oklahoma State on Oct. 24. For her efforts, she was named the College Sports Madness Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
Black, a Horsham, Pennsylvania, native, is an exercise physiology major and owns a 3.94 GPA. She was a member of the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Soccer First Team and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She also is a member of the President’s and Dean’s Lists and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
A two-year starter at center back for the Mountaineers, Black has helped WVU record eight shutouts this season, including four in conference road matches, marking the first time in program history the team did not allow a goal in a road conference contest. She has dished out two assists this season and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on Oct. 21.
The Mountaineers play host to Baylor in their regular-season finale tomorrow, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. It’s “Senior Night,” and forward Kate Schwindel, defender Jess Crowder, midfielder Ali Connelly and goalkeeper Katie Osterman will be honored before first kick. Additionally, Mountaineer Alumni will be recognized at halftime. Fans will be admitted for free, courtesy of United Bank.
Fans are encouraged to celebrate Halloween at DDSS Friday night, and all are invited to wear their Halloween costumes. Youth fans may attend Trunk or Treat in the Coliseum band parking lot starting at 5:30 p.m. Additionally, the Mountaineer Maniacs will award prizes at halftime for the top-three costumes.
