MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s rowing team opens its fall season at the 28th Annual Head of the Ohio Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 4, on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Mountaineers will compete in two races, with a total of seven entries. WVU will race three boats in the Women’s Open 8+ event at 9:20 a.m., and four boats in the Women’s Open 4+ event at 2 p.m.
One of the largest one-day regattas in the country, the Mountaineers will compete against a number of high quality programs Saturday. The Head of the Ohio is hosted by the Three Rivers Rowing Association, and has been ranked as one of the 10 largest fall races in the country.
“There are some technical elements we have emphasized during the two weeks we’ve been on the water that we certainly want to see executed in racing,” coach Jimmy King said. “Beyond that, we simply, but very importantly, want to see our crews compete. We want to see what kind of racing personality this year’s team has.”
WVU returns 31 from last season’s varsity roster, including 10 rowers from the 2013-14 novice squad, along with seven freshmen.
At last season’s regatta, the Mountaineers earned four first-place finishes in the Women’s Open 1x event (19:45.20), Women’s Open 2x event (17:41.46), Women’s Open 4+ event (17:41.41) and the Women’s Open 8+ event (15:34.66).
