MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After finishing out its nonconference slate earlier this week, the West Virginia University volleyball team will return to Big 12 action this Saturday when the squad travels to Ames, Iowa, for a tilt with Iowa State at the Hilton Coliseum. Match time is set for 2 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers (11-5, 1-1 Big 12) and the Cyclones (7-5, 0-2 Big 12) will meet for the eighth time, with Iowa State owning a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The two met three times in nonconference play before the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 in 2012. Iowa State took both of last season’s contests by scores of 3-0, while West Virginia last earned a win over the Cyclones in 1998 when they took a 3-0 victory in a neutral site match.
“Our Iowa State match marks the final stop of a string of three straight road matches for us within a week. Our team is in great shape, resilient, and very disciplined when it comes to the recovery aspect of things, so we are definitely up for the task,” said coach Jill Kramer. “Hilton Coliseum provides one of our favorite Big 12 environments to compete in. We are excited to compete there again.”
A 3-0 loss to Marshall wrapped up nonconference play for the Mountaineers, who went 10-4 outside of league play. Three of WVU’s four losses came against teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Poll (No. 9 BYU, RV Duke and No. 13 North Carolina). West Virginia took wins from Kent State, Toledo, IUPUI, Seton Hall and Montana.
Home court advantage is something that has proven to be true in the Big 12, as just two teams have more than one loss in their own arena. Ironically, those two teams are Iowa State and West Virginia. The Cyclones are 4-2 at Hilton Coliseum, while the Mountaineers have a 6-2 record at the WVU Coliseum with their losses coming to then-No. 9 BYU and No. 2 Texas.
Both Iowa State and West Virginia have faced the top-ranked team in the Big 12. After taking two sets from No. 2 Texas, the Mountaineers dropped the final three to fall 3-2 in the match. The Cyclones traveled to Austin on Wednesday and suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Longhorns.
Outside hitter Jordan Anderson will look to keep her impressive kills streak alive this weekend. The Flower Mound, Texas, native has finished in double figures in kills all 19 consecutive matches, including 16 this season. Her streak dates back to her freshman campaign, with November 21, 2013 against Texas marking the last time she finished in single digits. Anderson has posted double figures 39 times in 46 matches.
The Mountaineers will return home to for a three-match home stand, starting October 8 when they host Oklahoma at 6:30 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum in their annual Dig Pink match.
