FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Despite a double-double from Jordan Anderson, the West Virginia University volleyball team couldn’t overcome a slew of errors and dropped a 3-1 Big 12 contest to TCU at the Rec Center in Fort Worth on Wednesday evening. The Mountaineers fell in set scores of 21-25, 22-25, 26-24 and 19-25.
“We did not serve and pass as effectively as we have been, which affected many parts of our game,” said Mountaineer coach Jill Kramer. “TCU was more productive than we were both offensively and defensively tonight.”
Anderson recorded 22 kills and 10 digs, hitting for a .216 clip, for her third consecutive double-double and her eighth of the season. The Mountaineers (13-10, 3-6) hit .191 as a team with nine team blocks and 56 kills.
Nikki Attea had 13 kills and a pair of service aces, along with seven digs and four assists. Attea was one of a trio of players to share the team lead with four block assists, as Hannah Shreve and Caleah Wells also posted four blocks. Wells and Hannah Sackett chipped in five kills apiece, while Morgan Montgomery added four.
Including Anderson, a trio of Mountaineers finished in double figure digs in the match. Anna Panagiotakopoulos led the way with 15, while Gianna Gotterba tallied 13. Lamprini Konstantinidou had five digs to go with a team-best 31 assists, sharing time at setter with Brittany Sample, who had 13 assists and three digs. Konstantinidou also had five kills, hitting for a .625 clip.
Despite tying the Horned Frogs with 14 kills and two blocks in the first set, seven errors proved costly for the Mountaineers. TCU took a 4-1 lead before WVU scored three straight, tying the set on a block by Shreve and Attea. After jumping in front on a service error, the Mountaineers surrendered the lead to the Frogs, who scored three in a row to take a 14-9 lead on a kill. Coming out of a time out WVU rattled off five straight as Attea knotted the score at 15-15 with a kill. However, the Frogs went on a 6-0 run to take a 23-18 advantage on a kill. Attea, Konstantinidou and Anderson each found the court to cut the deficit to two, down 23-21, but a block and a kill gave TCU the 25-21 set one win.
The Mountaineers put up 16 kills to TCU’s 14 in set two, with both teams hitting .303, but four aces by the Frogs would help them take the set. The squads knotted the score 11 times before a 4-0 run pushed TCU in front 17-13 on back-to-back aces. Anderson had consecutive kills to cut the Frogs’ lead to two at 19-17, but TCU had two aces in a row to take a 23-18 advantage. Attea found the court and teamed with Shreve for a block, then added another kill as the Mountaineers trailed TCU, 24-21. Shreve and Sackett posted a block, but the Frogs returned the favor to take the set 25-22 for a 2-0 lead in the match.
TCU outhit West Virginia 16 kills to 14, but the Mountaineers completed a late comeback to stay alive in set three. After the Horned Frogs jumped out to a 5-2 lead, an Attea ace and a TCU attack out of bounds tied the set at 7-7. Four straight points for the Frogs put them up 18-14 before Montgomery and Shreve each had a kill to cut the deficit to a pair of points, down 20-18. Anderson found the court twice to keep the set within reach, before the Mountaineers took three in a row with TCU at set kill, scoring on an Attea kill, a TCU error and a kill from Montgomery. Attea served an ace to give WVU the 25-24 lead before Montgomery and Wells teamed for the lone block of the set as the Mountaineers completed the comeback and took the 26-24 set win.
Errors once again hurt the Mountaineers in set four, as they hit for a .105 clip with 12 kills and eight miscues. A 6-0 run that included five WVU errors put TCU in front 9-3 in the set. Wells had back-to-back kills, while Anderson found the court as well to cut the deficit to four, but the Frogs countered with three in a row to lead 15-10, forcing WVU to call a timeout. Attea, Montgomery and Konstantinidou each had a kill though the Mountaineers struggled to put together an offensive rhythm and trailed 17-13. Konstantinidou dumped it over for another point before Anderson put another through the pins, though TCU maintained a 24-18 lead. An attack out of bounds by the Horned Frogs at set point forced them to call timeout with a 24-19 lead. TCU came out of the timeout and put down the kill, taking the set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
West Virginia will travel to Norman, Oklahoma, on Saturday for an 8 p.m. (ET) match at No. 25 Oklahoma.
