The win improves WVU’s overall record to 8-6-1 and a 1-1-1 mark in Mid-American Conference play. The Mountaineers finished with a 14-5 shot advantage, and converted goals on their only two shots on goal.
“The guys came back and did a good job. I thought we should’ve had a couple of penalties as well that maybe don’t make that game as close at the end,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “It’s a good win, we’re 8-6-1 and in the top 35 of the RPI. The idea is to get on a little bit of a roll.”
Sophomore Jack Elliott scored his first career goal, the game winner, in the 78th minute to give the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead. Senior Andy Bevin drew a foul following an advantage and sent in a free kick from 40 yards out on the right side that Elliott converted on a diving header.
Trailing 1-0 late in the first half, freshman Jad Arslan tied the game in the 32nd minute with his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Alex Ochoa sent in a left-footed cross and Arslan put a diving header to the right of BGSU goalkeeper Nick Landsberger
Bowling Green netted the first goal of the match in the 21st minute, scoring an own goal as WVU sophomore goalkeeper Brent Arnold mishandled a cross. Vlad Lekarev sent in a cross from the right side of the field that deflected off Arnold and trickled past the goal line.
Arslan nearly had his second goal of the match in the 60th minute as Bevin played a short pass, but Arslan had his shot punched over the frame by Landsberger
West Virginia returns to action for the final non-conference matchup of the season at Penn on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the action through social media by following @WVUMensSoccer on Twitter.
