MOUNTAINEERS GARNERING PRESEASON RECOGNITION
WVU has been featured prominently in many of the preseason prognostications for the upcoming year. Lindy’s Magazine has the Mountaineers ranked 14th nationally. Athlon Sports listed WVU 18th in its preseason preview, while the Sporting News listed the Mountaineers 20th. In its Top 44 preseason preview, College Sports Madness ranked the Mountaineers 19th. Earlier this month, the Big 12 coaches voted WVU to finish third in the league.
GETTING BETTER EACH DAY
This year’s team has a good mix of veteran leaders and Coach Mike Carey understands it’s a process. However, he has been pleasantly surprised with the team’s strong work ethic and their daily improvement.
“They have to understand that I want it done right 10 out of 10 times,” noted Carey. “For us to get where we need to be, we need to do things right 10 out of 10. Some of our new players are starting to get that I am not going to let anything go because we need to get better as a team.”
TAKING PRACTICE TO THE COLISEUM
Part of this year’s adjustment for the seven new Mountaineers has been the rotation of practice. The team has shifted their routine from the Basketball Practice Facility to the WVU Coliseum to help the seven newcomers get adjusted to the ambiance and surroundings of the 14,000 seat arena.
“We have so many new players that have never played here,” said Carey. “The surroundings and the baskets are different. We need to get in here early in the season as much as we can.”
HAUNTED HOOPS
Mountaineer fans can get a first glimpse of the 2014-15 squad on Friday, Oct. 31 at the annual Haunted Hoops game presented by Coke Zero. Admission is free and open to the public as WVU hosts Wheeling Jesuit in a 7 p.m. exhibition game.
The evening will begin in the Coliseum parking lot at 5:30 p.m. with Trunk or Treat sponsored by the Institute of Industrial Engineers. Trunk or Treat is an opportunity for kids dressed in their Halloween costumes to receive candy from various registered student organizations out of trunks of their respective cars. Those wishing to participate should bring a clear grocery bag to fill with goodies.
WVU Coliseum gates open at 6 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costume.
GIVING A SNEAK PEEK
Select Mountaineer season ticket holders and Hoops ‘n Heels members were invited to an exclusive season preview on Sunday. The group of fans took a tour of the WVU Coliseum and the Basketball Practice Facility. After the walk through, fans had an opportunity to ask questions to Coach Carey and student-athletes.
