Countdown to Kickoff
October 23, 2014 01:04 PM | General
STILLWATER, Okla. – West Virginia is back on the road for an important Big 12 matchup against Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium this afternoon in Stillwater, Okla.
Today’s game is homecoming for the 5-2 Cowboys, looking to get back on the winning side of things following last week’s 42-9 loss at TCU. West Virginia, meanwhile, is looking to build off of last weekend’s 41-27 victory over Baylor at Milan Puskar Stadium that helped put the 5-2 Mountaineers back in the top 25 for the first time in two years.
Here is today’s Countdown to Kickoff, presented by the Friends of Coal:
10 – TEN redshirt freshmen have seen action for West Virginia so far this year: Al-Rasheed Benton, Hodari Christian, Shelton Gibson, Malik Greaves, Marcell Lazard, Jon Lewis, Grant Lingafelter, Nick Meadows, Mike Molina and Elijah Wellman.
9 – Quarterback Clint Trickett is seeking his NINTH consecutive 300-yard passing game against Oklahoma State. Trickett’s eight straight 300-yard games are already a school record.
8 – Since Dana Holgorsen’s arrival in 2011, West Virginia has produced EIGHT games with at least 600 yards of offense. Last week the Mountaineers had 456 total yards against Baylor to snap a streak of five straight games with at least 500 total yards.
7 – There have been SEVEN different games under Dana Holgorsen when the Mountaineer offense has run at least 90 plays, including a season-high 108 earlier this year at Maryland.
6 – SIX different runners have scored touchdowns so far this year for the Mountaineers: Rushel Shell (6), Dreamius Smith and Andrew Buie (2) and Wendell Smallwood, William Crest and Clint Trickett (1).
5 – Last weekend opponent Baylor was the third top-FIVE-ranked opponent West Virginia has faced so far this year – the most ever in one season in Mountaineer history.
4 – West Virginia’s defense produced FOUR sacks in last Saturday’s 14-point victory over Baylor – or half the total number of sacks it produced in the six games leading into the game.
3 – Kicker Josh Lambert has kicked THREE game-winning field goals during his career, including two this season. He now has five field goals of 50 yards or longer, tying a record established by Paul Woodside from 1981-84.
2 – The Mountaineer defense has permitted just TWO teams to score on an opening drive (just one of them being a touchdown) so far this season.
1 – Senior wide receiver Kevin White is the No. ONE receiver in the country this week in receiving with an average of 145.7 yards per game. He is also the FIRST player in college football to reach 1,000 yards receiving through only seven games.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN. To get ready for today’s game, be sure to check out the Mountaineer Tailgate Show beginning at noon on affiliates throughout West Virginia and also online. Then catch Tony Caridi and Dwight Wallace on the game broadcast via the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG.
