MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In its first official season back on campus, the West Virginia University men’s golf team recently wrapped up its fall practice season after a slew of mock qualifiers.
Despite waiting until the 2015 season to resume competition, Mountaineer coach Sean Covich strived to create a competitive atmosphere in addition to a traditional practice regimen for the squad. The four players on the current roster – Easton Renwick, Mason Short, Jon Ransone and Tae Wan Lee – have played a number of area courses in three different mock qualifiers since practice started in September.
“We played close to 10 different golf courses throughout the region this semester,” said Covich. “My goal was to create tournament-like atmosphere since we aren’t competing in any this year. We had three separate 'qualifying' events that consisted of 72 holes – similar to the Big 12 Championship. We will continue to have qualifying in the spring, with the winner earning an exemption into our first official tournament next September.”
Three of the players have transferred from other universities. Renwick played two seasons at Coastal Carolina, while Ransone spent a season on the Toledo roster and Lee transferred to WVU from the Florida. Short has been in Morgantown and is formerly the president of West Virginia’s club golf team.
“Easton proved himself to be the most consistent player throughout the fall, winning all three qualifiers,” said Covich. “Mason really improved his game, and nearly won the final two events. Jon and Tae Wan each showed glimpses of great play and will continue to work on their consistency in the spring.”
The practice sessions gave Covich the time to work with the quartet that will form the base of his squad moving forward. The season also allowed the players the chance to work on their game in a competitive environment without the pressure of weekly tournament play. Covich intends to announce additions to his team on national signing day on November 12.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the effort from the guys because we put ourselves in tournament-like situations,” said Covich. “They know where they need to focus during the offseason. I look forward to the spring season when we get back out there for more qualifying play. Next semester’s qualifiers will be key because that can serve as the springboard into summer amateur golf, which is important to the development of the game.”
The Mountaineers will resume varsity competition in September of 2015.
