MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following two Big 12 Conference shutout wins on the road, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team moves up five spots to No. 8 in today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Division I Women’s Top 25 Poll.
The Mountaineers’ climb comes on the heels of the team’s 3-0 win at Iowa State on Oct. 17 and 2-0 victory at then-No. 9 Kansas on Oct. 19. The victory over the Jayhawks was WVU’s first over a top-10 opponent this season and puts the squad’s 2014 record against ranked teams at 2-2-1. The Mountaineers (11-2-2, 4-0-1) have defeated at least one top-10 team in each of the last 10 straight seasons.
WVU’s unbeaten streak stands at 12 matches. The squad has not dropped a contest since a 2-0 loss to then-No. 21 Duke on Aug. 29.
Two additional Big 12 teams are ranked in this week’s poll, with KU (14-3, 4-2) dropping four spots to No. 13, and Texas Tech (12-3-1, 2-3-1) checking in at No. 15.
The poll’s top four remains unchanged from one week ago, with defending National Champion UCLA (13-0-2, 5-0-1 Pac-12) sitting at No. 1 and Florida State (14-1, 7-0 ACC), Virginia (14-1, 6-1 ACC) and Stanford (12-1-2, 4-1-1 Pac-12) following at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. North Carolina (10-2-1, 7-0 ACC) is up one spot to No. 5.
Additionally, this week’s NCAA RPI was released today, and the Mountaineers are up two spots to No. 8, the team’s highest position of the season and the best ranking in the Big 12 Conference. WVU moves up one spot to No. 12 in this week’s BennettRank Rankings.
The Mountaineers concluded their regular season with a three-match homestand at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The squad opens with Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 24, with first kick set for 7 p.m. WVU then plays host to Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh.
The first 100 Mountaineer Maniacs Friday night will receive a special Maniac Pom-Pom to help cheer on the Mountaineers throughout the match.
