West Virginia, coming off yesterday’s 41-27 victory over Baylor, has returned to the top 25 in both college football polls after a two-year hiatus. The Mountaineers are 22nd in the AP poll and 25th in the USA Today coaches’ poll, released earlier today.
West Virginia’s last appearance in the top 25 came two years ago on Oct. 28, 2012 when the Mountaineers were ranked 21st in the coaches’ poll and 23rd in the AP poll.
WVU lost 39-38 to TCU in triple overtime to fall out of the rankings.
West Virginia (5-2) is one of five Big 12 teams ranked this week: No. 10 TCU, No. 11 Kansas State, No. 12 Baylor and No. 17 Oklahoma in the AP poll and No. 10 TCU, No. 11 Kansas State, No. 13 Baylor and No. 18 Oklahoma in the coaches’ poll.
“I felt like we were pretty good,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said following yesterday’s win over Baylor. “We were disappointed with Oklahoma and we were disappointed with Alabama (both losses). We just didn’t feel good about being in the game.
“That’s what I told them at halftime – we are not in this to finish close again. Let’s go out there and win it. I commend our players for being very motivated this week; we had a great week of practice.”
Oklahoma State, this week’s opponent, fell out of the rankings following yesterday’s 42-9 loss to TCU.
“You turn the page and move on,” said Holgorsen. “We’ve got Oklahoma State (this week), which will be a tough game on the road.”
West Virginia’s remaining two home games against TCU on Nov. 1 and against Kansas State on Nov. 20 are against nationally ranked teams.
