MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - For the second time this season, Jordan Anderson has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.
Anderson led the Mountaineers and the Big 12 with 5.56 kills per set last week. The Flower Mound, Texas, native set a new personal best with 36 kills in a thrilling 3-2 win over TCU on Saturday. The sophomore hit for a .516 clip with just four errors on 62 total attacks, finishing just one dig shy of a double-double.
Anderson had just one receiving error in 44 attempts and had 37.5 points vs. TCU, averaging a league-best 5.89 points per set on the weekend. She also averaged 1.67 digs per set and hit for a .321 clip with 106 total attacks on the week.
This Week in Women’s Soccer:
The No. 14-ranked Mountaineers close out their road Big 12 Conference schedule with two matches … WVU travels to Ames, Iowa, for a meeting with Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m. ET … the team then heads to Lawrence, Kansas, for a 2 p.m. ET showdown at No. 11 Kansas … Sunday’s game will be streamed on ESPN3.

The Mountaineers (9-2-2, 2-0-1) earned a key 4-2 victory against No. 15 Texas Tech on Oct. 10 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … WVU fought against the cold rain and played a man down for the majority of the second half to earn its first win of the season against a ranked opponent … with the game knotted at 1-1, sophomore midfielder Ashley Lawrence gave WVU the lead for good, scoring her team-best fourth goal of the season in the 21st minute … Lawrence’s goal was a great individual effort, as she received the ball inside the box and dribbled it away from the pack toward the outside edge, where she then put a move on a TTU defender that drew the goalie off her line before sending a low shot toward the goal mouth and toward the far post … with TTU up 1-0, junior defender Maggie Bedillion scored in the eighth minute on a hard, lofting shot from 19-yards out … junior midfielder Cari Price scored the game-winner in the 60th minute, five minutes after redshirt-freshman forward Amandine Pierre-Louis was sent off with a red card … the goal was Price’s first of the season and came off a pass from junior midfielder Amanda Hill … freshman forward Michaela Abam added the insurance goal in the 72nd minute

West Virginia (12-7, 2-3 Big 12) will welcome Kansas (13-5), to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday evening ... the match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start time.

The Mountaineers went 1-1 in Big 12 action this week ... they dropped a 3-1 contest to Oklahoma on Wednesday, despite 14 kills from Jordan Anderson and a career-best six blocks from Hannah Shreve ... West Virginia then rebounded and snapped a three-match skid with a thrilling 3-2 win over TCU on Saturday ... Anderson hit .512 with a career-best 36 kills, smashing her previous career high of 24 in the third set ... Brittany Sample dished out a career-best 60 assists while Shreve tied her personal best with six blocks ... the Mountaineers put down a season-high 79 kills and hit .310, marking their first time over .300 since September 13.
Coach Jill Kramer: “I think they just put some heart out on the court. And we hadn’t seen that this week. It was good to see that and I told them it was good to have them back. They were fighting and playing hard, and we needed to do that to get back on track.”

WVU competed at the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta against host Georgia State and UNC Greensboro … on day two of the competition, WVU went undefeated, winning five singles matches and two doubles matches for a perfect 7-0 mark … freshman Lyn Yuen Choo went two-for-two in singles action for a team-best seven wins this season … Habiba Shaker made her debut in the Old Gold and Blue, and clinched her first win against UNC Greensboro Corinne Blythe in two straight sets.

West Virginia competed at the West Virginia State Games in Huntington, West Virginia ... the men’s and women’s squads earned first-place finishes to sweep the weekend competition, marking the fourth-consecutive year the Mountaineers swept the competition.

On the men’s side, Andrew Marsh claimed first in five individual events ... Marsh swept the 50 and 100 free events, while also placing first in the 100 fly (50.54), 100 back (49.56) and 200 back (1:53.49) ... senior diver Haily Vande Poel got her final season off to a strong start by sweeping the women’s 3-meter and 1-meter diving events ... Vande Poel posted a score of 304.05 in the 3-meter and a score of 271.50 in the 1-meter ... senior Julie Ogden placed first in the women’s 200 fly (2:06.96) and finished second in the women’s 100 fly (58.14) ... WVU opened its regular season against No. 8 TCU on Sunday, Oct. 12, and defeated the Horned Frogs, 4712-4664.

The Mountaineers won both disciplines, outshooting the Horned Frogs in smallbore, 2340-2308, and air rifle, 2372-2356… the team’s 4712 aggregate score is the highest of any opening match score in team history and two shots higher than any last season … WVU took the top-five spots in smallbore … junior Garrett Spurgeon placed first, shooting 589 (199 kneeling, 198 prone, 192 standing) and matching his personal high. “We can take a ton of positives from the match today. The shooters all worked hard throughout the match, and they were very disciplined and professional. We didn’t have many personal bests today, so there’s room for improvement, which is great. To have that great of a performance but know we can do better is encouraging for the rest of the season.”
