Mountaineers Move Up to No. 9

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team moved up one spot to No. 9 in today’s Soccer America Top 25 Poll.
The Mountaineers (3-0-1), the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team, moved ahead following their 2-0 showing this past weekend in Morgantown at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU opened its home season with a 4-0 victory over Central Michigan on Aug. 30, and a 2-0 win over Morehead State on Sept. 1. With the pair of wins, coach Nikki Izzo-Brown’s 19-year coaching record stands at 251-97-37.
Defending NCAA champion North Carolina (4-0-0), WVU’s opponent Sept. 8, continues to rank No. 1, while UCLA (4-0-0) is No. 2, Florida State (4-0-0) is No. 3, Virginia (4-0-0) is No. 4 and Stanford (2-0-1) is No. 5.
After receiving votes in the preseason and Week 1 polls, WVU broke into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Poll today and checks-in at No. 19. UNC also ranks No. 1 in the coaches’ poll, while FSU is No. 2 and UCLA is No. 3. Stanford is No. 4, and Virginia is No. 5. Big 12 foe Baylor ranks a league-best No. 9
The Mountaineers return to the road this weekend for the Duke Nike Classic, at Koskinen Stadium, in Durham, N.C. WVU will face the 12th-ranked Blue Devils on Friday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m., and the Tar Heels on Sunday at 11 a.m.
