Track Completes Day Two at Big 12s

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Stormy Nesbit was the third track and field student-athlete to score for WVU on Saturday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Waco, Texas.
Nesbit placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.93 meters and becomes the first Mountaineer to score in both the indoor and outdoor championship meets and earn All-Big 12 honors.
“After a turbulent spring, Stormy pulled out a nice jump to secure her place on the long jump podium,” coach Sean Cleary says.
Junior Chene Townsend also had a successful day at the Hart-Patterson Track Complex by placing sixth in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.81. Townsend moves into the finals that will take place tomorrow at 6:15 p.m., ET.
“We qualified those through that we expected to for tomorrow’s finals,” Cleary says. “Chene came into this competition a bit anxious about an injury, yet put that behind her with a qualifier for tomorrow’s final. Our belief is that we have six or seven opportunities to get on the awards stand tomorrow.”
Freshman Christa D’Egidio competed on Saturday in the 800-meter run and placed 18th with a time of 2:17.78. Junior Arielle Gaither ran in the 400-meter hurdles and finished in 15th place with a time of 1:07.79.
Karissa Knabenshue saw action for the first time at the three day meet by placing 17th in the shot put with a mark of 12.20 meters.
The final day of the championships begins at noon tomorrow with the triple jump, while the first event on the track is the 4x100-meter relay at 5 p.m. All times are eastern.
