Field Events Lead the Way at Virginia Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Strong marks from several Mountaineers led the West Virginia University track and field team at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend.
All of the competitors for WVU placed in the top five and Heather Adams led the way by recording a personal-best mark of 47.23 meters in the discus. Adams also took the top spot in the hammer throw, with a mark of 52.73 meters.
Sydney Cummings and Stormy Nesbit were the other field performers this weekend for WVU. Cummings placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters, while Nesbit finished first in the long jump with a leap of 5.86 meters. Nesbit also competed in the triple jump and recorded a mark of 11.98 meters for a fifth-place finish.
Chene Townsend was the only competitor on the track for the Mountaineers and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.66.
WVU will be off next weekend in preparation for the first round of NCAA Championships action, the NCAA East Preliminary Round, on May 23-25 in Greensboro, N.C. Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn berths to the NCAA East Preliminary, while the top 12 times/marks at both the East and West prelims will qualify for the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
