MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team faces Iowa State in its first match of a two-match homestand beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
"We learned a bit from our long TCU-Texas Tech trip early in the season, and have laid off a bit since our return on Sunday to make certain the team is fresh going into Wednesday,” says coach Jill Kramer. “The team got in the weight room and worked hard and conditioned a bit yesterday, and now we will use today as a prep day for Iowa State.”
The Mountaineers (17-10, 3-8 Big 12) remain just one win shy of their most wins in a single season since 2004, following an 0-2 trip at No. 24 Kansas and Kansas State this past week.
Sophomore setter Brittany Sample is just nine assists shy of 1,000 for the season and 49 assists short of 2,000 for her young career. Freshman outside hitter Jordan Anderson leads the Big 12 Conference in kills per set (4.06) for the fifth-consecutive week.
“We need to execute our game plan and play great team volleyball, which for us means communicating well, staying disciplined in our execution and enjoying the time we get to spend going to battle with another team,” Kramer says. “Our team has worked very hard to establish a presence with every team we've competed against. However, I think we still have a lot more in us that Iowa State hasn't seen."
The Cyclones (16-16, 9-2 Big 12) are receiving the most votes among unranked teams in this week’s AVCA Top 25 Poll, and won the first meeting between the two schools this season in straight sets on Oct 12, in Ames, Iowa.
Iowa State’s libero Kristen Hahn continues to lead the Big 12 in digs per set (5.85) and is ranked third nationally in the category, and ISU leads the league in service aces (139).
The Cyclones have won seven-consecutive matches and swept Oklahoma in front of 3,707 fans in its most-recent outing at Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State leads the all-time series between the two schools 5-1, including both meetings last season.
The Mountaineers continue their homestand against TCU on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
