MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team returns to the water this weekend at Thomas Eakins Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia on Saturday, Oct. 26.
“Competition at the Head of the Schuylkill will be substantially deeper than what we faced three weeks ago, so we'll get a better gauge of our progress this weekend,” says coach Jimmy King. “While we're of course concerned about how we're doing relative to our competitors, at this time of the year we're more focused on how we're progressing within our program.”
The Mountaineers will be competing in four races at the regatta. WVU will have one boat in the frosh/novice 4+, three in the open 4+, three in the open club 8+ and one open boat in the heavy championship 8+.
Making the trip for the Mountaineers will be Alexandra Basil, Megan Brophy, Whitney Chrisman, Alison Coates, Rachel Cokeley, M. Kaitlyn Cook, Lisa Deklau, Emily Deming, Elizabeth Duarte, Addie Dulaney, Kaitlyn Eason, Mallory Fisher, Abigail Fondren, Susannah Hartlove, Marika Hoskins, Jessica Hurlbert, Brittany James, Madison James, Elizabeth Kantak, Kelly Kramer, Morgan Leach, Caitlin Madamba, Kimberlie May, Caroline Mullins, Hannah Onians, Allyson Pytlak, Tamyra Roberts, Mollie Rosen, Bethany Anne Sapen, Courtney Schrand, Melinda Sharon, Summer Socha, Sarah Taylor, Karen Verwey and Kendra Welker.
Now in its 43rd year, more than 6,500 athletes are expected to compete over the 2.5-mile course in the Head of the Schuylkill. In last season’s edition, WVU claimed a fourth-place finish in the open 4+ with a time of 15:54.86. The Mountaineers were beat out by two Michigan State boats and Old Dominion’s “A” boat. The Mountaineers’ other two entries finished in 20th and 21st. In the open heavy championship 8+, WVU grabbed a 12th-place finish, crossing in 14:38.99, and a 20th-place finish.
Last time out, the Mountaineers claimed four gold medals at the Head of the Ohio on Oct. 5. Senior Courtney Schrand led the way for WVU with three gold medals (women’s 8+, women’s open 2x and women’s open 4+).
“I hope to see a smaller spread in time among our crews in the events that we have multiple entries - the open fours and the club eights,” King says.
