Trout Joins Baseball Staff

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball coach Randy Mazey announced today the hiring of Steven Trout as assistant coach.

Trout comes to Morgantown from Texarkana College, where he served as head coach since 2011. While with the Bulldogs, he coached the infielders and the hitters, as well as third base. Trout also handled the day-to-day operations in scheduling competitions and practice organization and oversaw team travel plans, budget, game management, recruiting and fund raising.

“Steven played for me at TCU when I first arrived there, and he was one of the hardest working players I have ever coached,” Mazey says. “He had a tremendous work ethic and got the most out of his abilities. He has a really good feel for the game, and the work ethic and energy he showed as a student-athlete have transferred to his coaching. I believe Steven is one of the best young coaches in the game, and I am really excited to have him join my staff.”

Trout led the Bulldogs to a 34-25 mark in 2012, and the squad led the conference in hitting with a .303 batting average. He coached the conference player of the year, and seven players were selected to the Region XIV East All Conference Team.

Prior to his appointment at TC, Trout served as a volunteer assistant at Houston under Todd Whitting for one season (August 2010 – July 2011). While at UH, Trout served as the third base coach and also coached the hitters, infielders and base runners. He also served as the camp director and assisted with recruiting and fund raising. The Cougars went 27-32 that season and finished as the Conference USA Tournament runners-up.

Trout began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Texas State University (December 2008 – August 2010) and served as the catchers and first base coach. He also assisted with the hitters and infielders, served as the camp director and took an active role with fund raising and recruiting.

TSU went 41-17 in 2009, a school-record for wins, and advanced to the NCAA Austin Regional after winning the Southland Conference regular-season championship. The team repeated as conference regular-season champions in 2010 and finished the season at 38-11.

Trout played two seasons at Texarkana College, earning all-conference honors and advancing to the 2005 NJCAA World Series in 2005 before finishing his collegiate career at TCU. While with the Horned Frogs, Trout made all 62 starts as a senior at first base. He posted a .326 batting average with 55 runs and 44 RBIs. In 2007, Trout was named to the Mountain West All-Conference second team and was an all-region selection at the Houston Regional. TCU won the Mountain West Conference Championship in 2006 and 2007, and also competed in the NCAA Regional in both seasons.

Following his collegiate career, Trout played baseball with the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association before joining the Macon Music in the South Coast League. In April 2008, he joined the Kansas City T-Bones and was a member of the 2008 Northern League Championship team.

A native of Hooks, Texas, Trout earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from TCU in 2007.

“I’m very excited to join the WVU baseball staff,” Trout says. “Coach Mazey is one of the best baseball guys I know. I know I will learn a lot working with him and Derek Matlock. I think Mountaineer baseball is going to make a lot of strides in the Big 12 Conference, and I’m excited to get started.”
