Baseball: WVU Completes Series with Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team will finish a season-long series with Akron on Wednesday, May 9 at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
The two teams previously met in Morgantown for a doubleheader on March 20, followed by a trip to Canton, Ohio, on April 17 for the third game of the series. WVU holds a 2-1 series advantage after winning game two of the doubleheader, 12-7, and winning at Akron, 17-6.
The Mountaineers (18-29 overall, 6-15 BIG EAST) are coming off a BIG EAST weekend series against No. 18 Louisville in which they won game one. Freshman second baseman Billy Fleming (6-for-12) and junior shortstop John Polonius (5-for-10) each hit .500 with two runs scored. Fleming knocked in five runs with one double, and Polonius drove in two runs with two doubles.
Freshman center fielder Bobby Boyd continues to lead WVU at the plate, batting .316 with 33 runs, six doubles, one triple, two homers and 17 RBIs. Boyd also leads the team in stolen bases with 19. Fleming and Polonius raised their season batting averages to .305 and .304, respectively, last weekend.
Akron (17-30 overall, 10-11 MAC) is coming off a conference sweep at the hands of Miami last weekend. Junior outfielder Jared Turocy leads the team with a .318 batting average, while junior Samuel Trecaso has a team-high 24 RBIs and is batting .394 over his last 10 games.
Neither team has decided on a starting pitcher.
