Baseball: Comeback Falls Short at Georgetown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 11, 2012) – The West Virginia University baseball team had the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings, but it was not enough as Georgetown claimed a 5-3 victory in the series opener at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
The loss dropped West Virginia to 19-30 overall and 6-16 in BIG EAST play while the Hoyas improved to 22-26 and 8-14.
“Their starting pitcher really dominated for most of the game,” coach Greg Van Zant says. “We had some good opportunities, but we weren’t able to capitalize on them.”
After going down 5-0, the Mountaineers battled back in the eighth inning to cut the Hoya lead to 5-3. Back-to-back singles by junior right fielder Brady Wilson and freshman center field Bobby Boyd began the frame, while sophomore first baseman Ryan McBroom loaded the bases with a fielder’s choice. Junior shortstop John Polonius singled through the left side to score Wilson, and freshman second baseman Billy Fleming hit a two-run single through the right side to bring the score to 5-3.
WVU loaded the bases again in the ninth inning, this time with one out, but an infield fly by sophomore designated hitter Matt Frazer and a fielder’s choice by Polonius that forced McBroom out at second base ended the game.
Polonius and Fleming continued to hold the hot bats, finishing with three hits and two hits, respectively. Fleming drove in two, while Polonius finished with one RBI. Wilson had two hits and one run for the Mountaineers.
Georgetown jumped out to a 5-0 lead and handed Mountaineer sophomore right-hander Corey Walter (5-5) his fifth loss of the year in his third-straight complete game.
The Hoyas used three-consecutive hits, including doubles by Mike Garza and Steve Anderson, in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Georgetown added three more runs with one run apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to extend the advantage to 5-0. Garza highlighted the insurance runs with a home run to left field in the seventh inning.
Walter gave up five runs and scattered 12 hits in the loss with six strikeouts and two walks. Jack Vander Linden earned the victory for the Hoyas, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Charles Steinman took the save in two innings of work. Steinman allowed three hits and struck out three.
