SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore right-hander Corey Walter pitched a complete game for the West Virginia University baseball team, but the Mountaineers fell 3-1 at Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The win clinched the series for the Pirates (25-18 overall, 10-7 BIG EAST) after they won a back-and-forth contest on Friday night 11-9. The Mountaineers (17-26, 5-12) dropped their fourth BIG EAST series of the year in six opportunities.
Seton Hall opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-run single through the left side by Giuseppe Papaccio. Zack Granite, who singled to lead off the frame, and Mike Genovese scored on Papaccio’s single.
Walter was masterful following the first inning, lasting eight innings and giving up three runs on six hits. Walter struck out three and walked three in the start.
Meanwhile, Pirates’ starter Brian Harvey tossed six innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits. Harvey struck out nine and issued two walks. The save went to Benny Mejia, who allowed two hits and struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief.
Junior left fielder Chris Rasky cut the Pirates lead in half during the fourth inning with a two-out single to right field. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Rasky was driven in on a single to right field by sophomore third baseman Nate Antone.
The Pirates added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Papaccio, driving in Genovese from third.
The Mountaineers had a great opportunity in the second inning as they loaded the bases with no outs, but Harvey worked out of the jam to retire the next three batters. WVU left two runners stranded in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings.
Freshman center fielder Bobby Boyd led WVU with two hits, while five different WVU hitters recorded one hit with Antone driving in the Mountaineers lone run. Freshman second baseman and junior catcher Alan Filauro each drew two walks. Scott Kalamar led Seton Hall with two hits, while Papaccio drove in all three Pirate runs.
WVU and Seton Hall conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m., with live video and live stats links available on MSNsportsNET.com. The game will be another right-handed duel, as junior Dan Dierdorff will start for the Mountaineers with Brian Gilbert taking the mound for the Pirates.
