Women's Soccer: WVU Splits Doubleheader

MADRID – The West Virginia women’s soccer team split a pair of matches against Royal Vallecano, the reigning Spanish Women’s Champions, Tuesday evening in Madrid, Spain.
“We did some good things against the first team but that took most of our legs for the second game,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Their ‘A Team’ had some good players who finished their scoring chances.
“It was great to play against a physical, mature team like Rayo. We’ll build from our mistakes and keep enjoying our trip overseas.”
Forward Frances Silva led the Mountaineer to 1-0 victory in game one with a goal in the 23rd minute. Silva one-timed a shot from six yards out off a service from defender Bry McCarthy on the left flank. McCarthy made a run forward and served a ball into the heart of the box to earn the assist.
Goalkeepers Sara Keane and Katie Osterman combined for the shutout in the first match.
The Mountaineers’ second match saw back-and-forth action until Rayo scored in the 20th minute on a ball played over the top of the defense. Keane came off her line as the Rayo forward was able to squeeze a shot past her.
Rayo added a pair of late goals to put the game away at 3-0.
WVU’s best scoring chance came on a Kate Schwindel header sent wide of the left post off a corner kick.
West Virginia travels to Barcelona on Wednesday and concludes its competition with a friendly on Friday, March 30, against RCD Espanyol.
