Rowing: Set to Compete at UNC, Georgetown

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team is set to open its regular season against North Carolina and Georgetown, Saturday, on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C.
“The first race of the season is typically approached with a mix of excitement and uncertainty,” says head coach Jimmy King. “Everyone's excited to finally start racing. The uncertainty lies in not yet having a good gauge of how well we're moving our shells. Conditions on the river fluctuate too greatly to rely on times as an accurate indicator of speed.”
West Virginia has four entries in this weekend’s competition, with one boat set to compete in the women’s second varsity four event, the women’s varsity four event, the women’s second varsity eight event and the women’s varsity eight event.
Saturday’s season opener marks the third consecutive year that the Mountaineers have started their spring campaign against the Tar Heels.
Last year against North Carolina and George Mason, West Virginia placed second in the varsity eight and third in both the second varsity eight and novice eight. In 2010, the Mountaineers placed first in the varsity eight, and second in the varsity eight and novice eight.
Saturday’s competition will be the third race of the season for North Carolina, who has already faced George Mason, Old Dominion and Delaware. The Tar Heels defeated George Mason in five events two weekends ago, while winning six of nine events against Old Dominion and Delaware last weekend.
Saturday’s competition will mark the first race of the season for BIG EAST opponent Georgetown.
“It’s certainly valuable to get an early season look at Georgetown and to know at the start of the year where we stand compared to them,” King says. “It gives us a preview that in the past years we haven’t had. Any time you get a look at a BIG EAST team early in the season, it’s going to be helpful.”
Following Saturday’s competition, the Mountaineers will travel to Lake Lure, N.C., for a week of spring training. They will return to action on Sunday, April 1 at the Occoquan Sprints which are set to take place on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va.
