Wrestling: NCAA Session One Update

ST. LOUIS – In the first session of the NCAA Wrestling Championships, the West Virginia University wrestling team had two wrestlers open their tournament with decision victories.
Junior Lance Bryson (174) scored his first career victory at the national tournament, as he defeated Wyoming’s Pat Martinez in his first-round matchup. Bryson’s first-round win was a 2-1 decision that came in overtime. In the second round of the championship bracket, Bryson will square off against No. 4-seeded Logan Storley of Minnesota.
Redshirt senior Brandon Williamson (HWT) was the other Mountaineer wrestler to win his first round match, and his victory also came in overtime. Williamson fell behind 4-2 in the second period of his match, but was able to tie the match at four in the third period. In overtime ride outs, Williamson earned an escape point that clinched the victory. In the second round, Williamson will face No. 4-seeded Zach Rey of Lehigh.
As for the other four WVU grapplers competing in the NCAA Championships, each lost their first round match and will have to wrestle their way back through the consolation bracket.
Junior Shane Young (125) dropped a 10-8 decision to Stanford’s Ryan Mango in his first match, and he will face Maryland’s Shane Gentry in his first match of the second session.
Redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi (133) was defeated by Aaron Kalil of Navy in a tough 6-3 decision match. Pennesi will take on Boise State’s Brian Owen in the first round of consolations.
Sophomore Michael Morales (141) opened his tournament with an 8-4 decision loss to No. 3-seeded Montell Marion of Iowa. In the first round of consolations, Morales will wrestle Stephen Dutton of Lehigh.
Redshirt senior Matt Ryan (184), who wrestled in the pigtails of the championship bracket to open his tournament, was defeated 5-0 by Boise State’s Jacob Swartz to begin the day. Ryan will open the second session with a bout against MacKain Stoll of North Dakota State.
