Swimming: WVU Completes Second Day of Prelims

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The WVU men and women’s swimming and diving teams completed prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships, Friday morning.
Austen Carrington battled through the 400 IM but was out touched at the last second. Her swim landed her a No. 12 seed in the consolation finals (4:23.91).
Two of the men were able to claim spots in the top 16 for the 400 IM. Jake Querciagrossa will swim in the finals as a No. 8 seed (3:55.27). Joseph Aburahma took the No. 16 (4:04.44) and will compete in the consolation finals.
Mandie Nugent and Julie Ogden are the No. 2 (53.86) and No. 3 (54.09) seeds in the 100 fly. Eva Burlingham grabbed in the No. 9 seed (55.52) and will compete in the consolation finals. Nikki Vetterlein will join Burlingham in the consolation finals as the No. 15 seed (56.01).
Taylor Camp, Bryce Bohman and Brandon Carr will compete in the finals for the 100 fly. Camp is seeded first (47.06), Bohman fourth (48.06) and Carr fifth (48.38). Brad Eichenseer and Martin Vanis are the No. 12 (49.77) and No. 13 (49.92) seeds in the consolation finals.
Rachael Burnett claimed her second No. 1 seed (1:47.36) of the championships in the 200 free. Kata Fodor out touched her competition, earning her the No. 7 seed (1:49.02) in the finals.
Nathan Cobbe had a great swim in the 200 free that landed him the No. 7 seed (1:38.49) in the finals. Hugh Simmonds will also compete in the finals as the No. 8 seed (1:38.59). Daeton Davenport claimed the No. 13 seed (1:39.20) in the consolation finals.
Three will compete in the 100 breast consolation finals for the women. Jenelle Zee grabbed the No. 13 seed (1:03.53), Breanna McCann No. 15 (1:03.65) and Jaryn Studer No. 16 (1:03.97).
Jack Greenhalgh will have a chance to score some points for the men as the No. 14 seed in the 100 breast consolation finals.
Danielle Smith will compete in the 100 back finals as the No. 2 seed (54.60). Rachael Gorrie will also compete in the finals as the No. 8 seed (55.69). Vetterlein and Tiera Butkus will compete as the No. 10 (56.02) and No. 13 (56.34) seeds in the consolation finals.
The men finished the afternoon with Bohman and Carr taking the No. 3 (48.32) and No. 6 (49.44) seeds in the 100 back finals. Eric Johnson will compete in the consolation finals as the No. 9 seed (50.21).
Overall, 25 swimmers will return for the Mountaineers in tonight’s finals at 6 p.m.
