Football Player Quotes

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University football team addressed members of the media on Tuesday night. The Mountaineers travel to Oklahoma State on Saturday, November 10, at 3:30 p.m. on ABC.

Jeff Braun
On the mentality after a loss

You come in Sunday, and you’re mad. You don’t like what you see, but what you have to do on Sunday night is get over it and learn from what you did first of all. If you aren’t learning from the mistakes that you see on film that you hav on the field, then you’re not going to get any better. So you have to learn from it. On Sunday, you have to close that chapter. Right now, we have to look forward to Oklahoma State and then you have to come in, and we had a tough physical practice today. That is what you have to do. You have to get better on the practice field and carry that over to the game.

On learning from the TCU game
We just have to work as a unit. That is one thing that you see. You can have four guys blocking their butts off and trying to finish their job, but then one guy doesn’t do it, that can ruin the play. That is the biggest difference in college football. You need to have all five offensive linemen working as a cohesive unit, and if not then you aren’t going to get anywhere.

Isaiah Bruce
On the third-down defense

Third down was huge. I think they finished 4-for-16 on third downs or something like that. In order to win games, we have to get off the field on third downs and give our offense more opportunities with the ball.

On making sure errors don’t happen again
We just have to keep getting better in practice. We need to keep going over the little things in practice and make sure we are doing our jobs.

Oklahoma State's offense is similar to WVU's, is it helpful to know the offense
Not really. Even though we’ve been seeing our offense this whole time, we have an idea of what everyone else does. It is pretty similar; everybody usually does the same exact thing, just different formations, and different kind of speeds. It is the same thing every week; we just have to get better and continue getting better with our keys and doing our jobs.

Cecil Level
His path to WVU

I started off at West Virginia Tech for two years, played corner there and a little bit of safety. I started my freshman year, and two of my coaches there used to play here, Michael Scott and John Pennington. They basically believed in me and said I had a chance to play at the Division I level, and that I should try and walk on. So I made that jump to come here.

Aspirations of playing Division I Football
I had aspirations of playing at the Division I level. While playing in high school, everyone believes they are going to play Division I. I just had the coaches there that saw something and believed in me and thought that I could play at this level.

On how he ended up at WVU Tech
They recruited me, and a lot of people from my home area in Georgia, to go to their school and play.

On making a name for himself on special teams
Being on special teams was great. Just starting off and making my way in, I was doing what I could to help the team and make plays on special teams from every standpoint out there. I now have a chance to play on defense, and do the same thing as well. I give a lot of effort and do what I can to help the defense and the team win.

Geno Smith
On the mentality of the team heading into Oklahoma State

We just have to go out there on Saturday with the mentality that we are going to score. We have to be confident. We have to play fast, and we have to play hard. Things haven’t changed for us. I still think that we have a really good offense. We are making progress, working guys in and out of the rotation as far as receivers, backs and offensive linemen. We are going to have fresh bodies out there and are going to be ready to play.

On if he thinks last week was a step in the right direction
I think so. For the most part, we were able to sustain drives and put together some good drives. Overall, we did a pretty good job at just keeping the ball in play and moving forward. We did not have many negatives plays. We had some costly penalties here and there, or costly turnovers. That was all on me, bad reads or bad throws, probably one of the worst in my career, but overall, you know we did some good things, and we have some things we need to learn from.

On the drops by the receivers and the frustration from that
I know those guys want to make plays, and it is a part of the game, just like interceptions are, just like missed blocks and fumbles. It is just a part of the game, and those guys had drops, but I did not lose confidence in those guys. They make plays for me and make me look good in times when I don’t throw as good of a ball as I should, and sometimes they are going to drop it. You just have to move onto the next play and not get caught up in it.

Shaq Petteway
On the result of the loss

You just have to take the things that we did good, and continue to do them and take the things that happened late in the game, like the communication part, where they had the 95 yard touchdown, and learn from that and keep getting better.

On Oklahoma State’s offense being similar to WVU’s
It is similar to our offense. We know some of the things they are going to do, and at the same time, they are going to do some things that will exploit us. Having coaches that have been there before and know what they are going to do in key situations will help us out.

On if the similar offense will be confusing
Our coaches told us today that they are going to be similar to our offense, but that they are going to throw in new plays.
