Carey Signs Two for 2013-14 Roster

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University women’s basketball coach Mike Carey announced today the signing of two players to the 2013-14 Mountaineer roster.

Teana Muldrow (East Orange, N.J./East Orange) and Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) make up West Virginia’s 2013 signing class.

“We are really excited to have this pair become a part of the Mountaineer family next year,” says Carey. “They are both great student-athletes, who come from great families and will contribute to the success of West Virginia women’s basketball over the next four years.”

Muldrow, an East Orange, N.J., native, is a four-star prospect, ranked No. 34 overall, nationally, by ESPNU HoopGurlz. Her highest ranking came at No. 31 by Blue Star, however she also ranked No. 36 nationally and No. 5 at forward by the All-Star Girls Report. Standing at 6-foot-2, Muldrow is considered a force in the paint with five 30-point games and at least double-figure scoring numbers in all 26 games last season.

“Teana is a good size guard that can go inside and outside,” Carey says. “We’re excited about her because she can shoot the three, go inside and can play multiple positions. She gives us another big guard.”

As a junior at East Orange High under the direction of coach Derrick Johnson, Muldrow recorded a triple-double with 32 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks, in addition to scoring her 1,000th-career point in a 73-64 win over Franklin in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 playoffs in East Orange. At the close of her junior season, Muldrow averaged 22.7 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game and 3.7 blocks per game. Muldrow also plays for the New Jersey Sparks under the direction of coach Keith Gilchrist, where this past summer, she was named to the 2012 Adidas All-American Camp, comprised of the Top 60 Rising Seniors as selected by a committee of Grassroots Directors.

“It’s a great opportunity for Teana to play with West Virginia University and in the Big 12 Conference,” coach Johnson says. “I’m a big fan of college women’s basketball and follow the team and think she can help out and contribute right away. It is a big deal for me and this school because we’ve had players sign with colleges, but WVU is a big time program. Teana is a very loving kid, who works hard, is very loyal to her team and is very coachable.”

Gordon, a 6-foot-4 post out of Mount Vernon, N.Y., is a four-star prospect who ranks No. 11 in her position by ESPNU HoopGurlz and No. 60 overall according to Dan Olson’s Collegiate Report. As a junior at Mount Vernon High, Gordon averaged 13.5 points per game, 11.9 rebounds per game and 3.1 blocks per game. Gordon will join current Mountaineers Taylor Palmer who also went to Mount Vernon and former club Exodus player Darius Faulk on the 2013-14 roster.

“Birdie gives us another post player with size that is much needed for the Big 12 Conference,” Carey says. “She will really help us out in the paint and is a player that can come in and contribute immediately.”

In addition to joining Palmer on the squad, Gordon will join former Mount Vernon graduates in current men’s basketball player Jabarie Hinds and former player Kevin Jones. One other connection the incoming freshman has is the fact that her Mount Vernon High coach Patrice Wallace-Moore is the wife of former WVU men’s basketball player Lowes Moore (1977-80).

“I am extremely excited about Birdie playing at West Virginia,” coach Wallace-Moore says. “It allows her to re-unite with former Mount Vernon teammate Taylor Palmer, and of course my husband played there and Kevin Jones and Jabarie Hinds, so there is a Mount Vernon-West Virginia connection. It’s exciting to see her continue that legacy. Birdie is a gentle giant. She has untapped potential and I look forward to seeing her grow in the West Virginia women’s basketball system.”

Gordon, a varsity player since the seventh grade, has participated in four consecutive sectional finals, won two consecutive sectional tournaments, played in two consecutive regional finals and was a part of a NYS Class AA semifinal appearance. She was named All-Section honorable mention and All-State 12th team as a sophomore, while earning All-Section and All-State Third Team honors as a junior. Gordon has amassed 781 points, 690 rebounds and 170 blocks at Mt. Vernon High.

The All-Star Girl’s Report released its rankings and rated West Virginia’s class of Muldrow and Gordon as No. 25 nationally.
