CHICAGO – West Virginia’s junior quarterback Geno Smith and junior wide receiver Tavon Austin have been nominated for the FRS Quarterback and Mercedes-Benz Wide Receiver Performances of the Year, respectively, Intersport announced today.
The Quarterback and Receiver Performances of the Year are part of a four-month competition that lets fans determine which individual performances reign supreme during the 2011 college football season. The winners will be revealed during the two hour All-Star Football Challenge special airing at 7 p.m. ET Feb. 3 on ESPN2. In addition to recognizing the season’s top performances, the All-Star Football Challenge will feature college football’s biggest stars in a live skills challenge. In the 13 year history of the event, 41 first-round NFL draft picks have participated in the All-Star Football Challenge.
From the beginning of the year through Bowl season, the two top quarterbacks and the two top wide receivers of the week have been featured on the All-Star Football Challenge Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AllStarFootball), along with two top individual performers among running backs and defensive players. The top weekly vote-getter will proceed to the finals, which run Jan. 16-22.
In the Mountaineers’ first Orange Bowl appearance, Smith broke Tom Brady’s passing record by throwing for 401 yards, as well as tying the record for any bowl game with six-touchdown passes, four of which went to Austin for eight, 27, three, and 37 yards. Those four touchdown catches tied an individual record for any bowl game. The unstoppable Mountaineer led the way to the team’s first Orange Bowl victory, a record- setting 70-33 win over Clemson. Smith’s astounding efforts were awarded when he was chosen as the game’s Outstanding Player.
The other week seventeen nominee for FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year is Houston’s Case Keenum. Keenum threw for 532 yards and three touchdowns in the Cougar’s 30-14 victory over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl.
