Women’s Soccer: U.S. U-20s Call For Schwindel

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia women’s soccer freshman Kate Schwindel has been called in to training camp with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team. The squad will train under coach Steve Swanson at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., from Jan. 5-19.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to train with some of the best players in the country,” says Schwindel, the 2011 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. “This will be a great experience where I can improve my skills as a player and proudly wear the Team USA colors.”
Schwindel is one of nine forwards in the 30-person training camp that will play two 60-minute scrimmages against Shanghai Women’s Football Club of China on Jan. 12 and Jan. 18. The U.S. U-20s are preparing for qualifying for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
A Livingston, N.J., native, Schwindel put together a stellar rookie season with the Mountaineers. She was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year after leading all conference rookies in points with 15 in 11 matches. Schwindel, a second team all-BIG EAST pick, finished with 19 points on six goals and seven assists. Her 19 points tie for third-most by a freshman in school history.
