MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck announced today the 2012 spring rowing schedule.
“Coach Jimmy King has done an excellent job of putting together a challenging schedule for his team,” Luck says. “This is a quality schedule that provides competition from some of the top rowing programs in the country, and I am looking forward to watching the team excel this season.”
The 2012 slate features competition at seven spring regattas, including three against BIG EAST opponents.
The Mountaineers will begin their season on Saturday, March 17 with a scrimmage against familiar opponent George Washington on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va. West Virginia has faced the Colonials three times in program history, coming away with one first-place finish and six second-place finishes in multiple events.
The Mountaineers will return to the water on Saturday, March 24 to open the regular season against North Carolina and Georgetown on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C., marking the third year in a row that West Virginia has opened its season against North Carolina.
“Upon completion of our racing at UNC, we'll travel to Lake Lure, N.C., where we hold our annual training camp during WVU's spring recess,” says head coach Jimmy King. “At the end of the week, we'll travel to Virginia to compete in the Occoquan Sprints, which was a new addition to the schedule last year.”
This year, the Occoquan Sprints will take place on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va., on Sunday, April 1. Last year, the Mountaineers saw three boats place in the Grand Finals, with the Varsity 8+ finishing in second place, the Second Varsity 8+ finishing in third place and the Novice 8+ finishing in fifth place.
The Mountaineers will then travel to Cherry Hill, N.J., on April 14 and 15 to compete at the Knecht Cup Regatta on the Cooper River. The regatta features competition from over 50 colleges and universities across the country.
“The Knecht Cup Regatta has been on WVU's schedule for many, many years and continues to be an important mid-season event for the Mountaineers,” King says. “The depth and variety of competition at the regatta provides our program with an excellent test at that time of the season.”
Following the Knecht Cup Regatta, the Mountaineers will host their third home race in program history against Dayton on Saturday, April 21.
“Our lone home date of the spring is against regional rival University of Dayton,” says King. “Dayton has visited Morgantown several times in the past few years. As expected with repeated racing, there is familiarity between the programs.”
After their home race, the Mountaineers will compete against Iowa, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Syracuse at the Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis on Sunday, April 28.
“Our regular season will close with a trip to Indianapolis, where we'll see BIG EAST foes Notre Dame, Rutgers, and Syracuse along with the Big Ten's Iowa Hawkeyes,” King says. “Not only does this regatta provide our team high-level racing at the end of the season, but it will serve as a good assessment for all of the BIG EAST schools leading into the conference championship two weeks later.”
The Mountaineers will conclude their season at the BIG EAST Championships, which take place at Mercer Lake in Windsor, N.J., on Sunday, May 13.
